THE EVENING STAR. THE MIANTONOMAH. The Miantonemeh at Spithead—Experi- mental Firing for the benefit of English | Visitors. [From the London Times, July 2.) This formidable war vessel, which, as the first American turret-ship that has visited the shores of Europe, creat such an extraordi- mary degree of interest — her recent visits | sailed from the latter roadstead early on Sat- ware morning for Cherbourg, where she will remain a short time open,as bas been tous, to the admiration and criticism of our friends and allies across the channel. Cherbourg existing understood arrangements send the Miantonomah to the Medway or the Thames, and thence to the Baltic. She is ex- Pected to call again at Spithead on her return Gown channel from the Baltic. a. the Stay of the ship at both (jueenstown and Spit- bead she was, during each day, open to the ad- sion of all visitors. Thousands of people availed themselves of the opportunity, and must have left her impressed with the kind- Bess with which they were received by the officers and the untiring pains tagen toexplain all the numerous details of the plan and fit- tings of the ship's hull, turrets. armor, and guns. We have learnt much from the visit of the Miantonemah, and her officers will not go from our shores without having added to their previous knowledge of the manner in which guns may be fought in revolving iron towers en board a ship. in their visitto the Miantouomah at Spithead on Friday last, the Lord of the Admiralty were accompanied by the Hon. G. V. Fox, an As. sistant Secretary of the United States Nav: Captain Cowper Phipps Coles. R. N; Captain GBythesea R. N.N. C. Naval Attache to the British Embassy at Washington; Lord John May. M. P_ the Earl of Wilton. Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadran; Mr. Westley Rich- a &c., in addition to a number of naval ofi- eers and others mentioned in the Times of Saturday. The duke of Somerset, with the Comptroller and other members of the Board ot Admuraity, baving been conducted over the ship by Capt- ain Beaumont, and minutely inspected her on deck and below, took up @ position on the raised burricane deck, in company with Hon. Me. Fox, to witness the firing of two shots from the enormons 15 inch smooth bore guns, which | form her turred armament. The officers and erew of the ship took up their ,respective posi- tions at geheral quarters, all es were se~ eurely battened down. the supply of air below was provided for by setting the veutilating fans | +0 Motion, and the ship in every respect pre- | pared for action at sea. These preparations having been made,a visit to the deck below demonstrated clearly enough that although in A portions of the tween decks the atmos- phere tett shghtly oppressive after just leaving the open air of upper deck, the air was really cool z= proved by the thermometer ranges, and the ship might be fought through along sum- | mer day's ac under the same conditions | without distress te on board from heat be- yond what would n arily be found in any ordinary steamship of war. | The first cun fired w charged with a35 d powers cartridge and a s live shell ele T was very non ypounds, and shot was grand ne the flight of a15 inch shell, this | was more inter esting as exhibiting—what we have as yet made no perfection for m rifling our heavy navy artiliery—the perfection of | ricochet firing. The immense ball spun along | ats course Over the surtace of the water as tru- ly as the cricketer’s ball passes over the green | Sward toward the wicket. The noise of the | explosion, the copcussion felt, and the smoke which entered the turrets on the firing of the guns were no more nor less than would be na- turally expected in firing 32 pound powder charges. The working of the guns on board the Mian- tonomah on Friday was somewhat slow, but this was accounted for by the fact that it was the frst time the same crews had worked the guns in actual service.
