The following is the official showing ot the circulation of the daily papers of this city competing for the Government advertising under the recent act of Congress directing such advertising to be made in the two daily news- papers ot Washington having the largest circulation : EveEyine STar. 7,715 copies perday. | Chronicle... 5,068 « « Intelligencer. 3,552 « ~ i The protectionists had it all theirown way in the House of Representatives yesterday: and as there seems to bea regular system of log- rolling going on, in which most of the mem- bers are concerned, each voting for his neigh- bor's speciality. with the understanding that | the favor will be reciprocated: we presume that so far as Congress is concerned the mter- ests of consumers are to be sacrificed to those of manufacturers and dealers with large stocks on hand, who will be benefitted by the in- creased rates. Yesterday it was agreed to further pretect’’ window glass, (fazing day- dight,) fire bricks, books and engravings, bristol board. salt, herrings, skins, shoe- bindings, &e. The tax on herrings and salt will bear with peculiar hardship on the poor man; but who cares’ Thus, Mr. Pat- terson, yesterday, moved to reduce the duty on imported books from 20 to 10 per cent.. because the persons who required the kind of books referred to were chiefly poor scholars, who must either get their books cheap, or else forego them altogether. He contended that it was due to the inter. ests of education. due to the rising genera- tion, who were to be our lawyers and our leg- islators bereafter, that no sugh obstacle should be placed by Congress in the way of their im- provement as that involved in a high duty upon foreign books. But the advocate of poor scholars was very Promptiy voted down. Why! Because some- body bad to be “protected. Some of the New England manufacturing companies have de- clared dividends of only forty and forty-five per cent. for the year past. The Chicopee has declared the jatter, and the Pacific Mills twen- ty per cent. for sixmonths. Of course, the ne- cessity for further protecting these interests is clear, even if the operatives have to pay two prices ior food, raiment and fuel. A VETO WANT That staunch Republican journal, the New York Post. discour-es as follows in reference t> the “impradence of the pre iibitio tists” in forcing the proposed obnoxious tariff bill through Congress “We cannot doubt thai the President will Veto this oppressive bill. He is too enlightened @ statesmman, and to impartial a lover of the Whole coun'ry, to give bis consent to a scheme Whose efforts will be. as we have frequently shown, to cripple our foreign commerce: to ancrease the present high prices of the neces- saries of life; to retard the progress of the country. to grant monopoisies to a few manu- facturing capitalists: and to seduce the scanty laboring force of the country frem Profitable into unprofitable employments. “Whatis needed is a revenue tir.ff: and we hope some members of Congress will take the trouble to frame @ bill to that end, and pro- pose i. Im the meantime we trust the mem- bers from the Southern States who can take the oath will be admitted to their seats. «We warn the prohibitionists that they ride too high a horse for safety. They are trying to force & most hateful and wicked scheme Upon the country. That is bad enough: but they Sre at the same time keeping out the representatives of the Southern States. Are they doing this in order to make sure of their own schemes? Is itto secure the passage of this probibitive and destructive bill that they Tefuce to sdmit the Southern members? It Would seem so from their high-handed course “The American people will not tolerate such legislatien: they will Sweep away, at the first Opportunity, men so faithless to the general welfare: there are already signs to show that the men who vote for this tariff, es pecially under the aggravating circumstances of the exclusion from debate and vote of the South- ern members will be left inasmall majorit: ia the next Congress. yany THE TARIFF AGalN. | | rere cay BEPORT OF INDIANS IN NEVADA. Commissioner Cooley has received a report from Superintendent of Indian Affairs H. G. Parker, dated Carson City, Nevada, June Sth, im relation to the condition of the tribes in bis charge. and the progress made in the efforts of the Government to establish among these tribes #n interest in agricultural pursuits. He states that the Indians are in good health, and are quiet and peaceable. The Washoes are now engaged ia fishing at Lske Tahoe. The Su- perintendent has caused a tract of land to be plowed, sitnated on the Truckee river Reser- vation, in which the Pah-Utes have planted tors and other vegetables. They seem to ‘well pleased with the idea, and work very faitbfatly. This has been done without any expense to the Government, and the Superin- tendent expecis to create quite an interest in warming smong these Indians, when funds are provided for that purpose. He states that «ince his last report. bis district has been increased by the addition of six counties of Virginia and two of West Virginia, which have been constituted a sub-district, and desig- nated as the Shenandoah Division, under the charge of Brevet Major J. 4. Remington, with headquarters at Winchester. The Staite of Weet Virginia, excepting two counties, is also a sub-district under the charge of Captain Thos. E. Donglass, with headquarters st Recent reports from that State give exceedingly flattering accounts of the condi- ton of freedmen there, and as there appears to be no necessity ofa permanent oflice in that section, the officers will be recalled. IN yesterday’s issue we referred to the arrest of F. A. Aiken, formerly of the firm of Aiken & Ciampitt, on charge of obtaining money under talse pretences. The check presented at the counter of Riggs & Oo. was signed Aiken & Clampitt. We are authorixd to state that the signature was not that of Mr. Clampitt, but that his name was signed to the check by Mr. Aiken, and cashed by Mr. Buchly, without 's knowledge or consent. And further, that Mr. C. drew no money out of Riggs & Co.'s bank at that time belonging to the firm: and that there is mo firm now existiug of Aiken & Clampitt, the same baying been dissolved some months since. We say this in justiee to the well known cbaracier and reputation of our young fellow citizen Mr. C.. upon whose integrity as a business man, or honor as a citi- zen, no breath of suspicion has ever been cast. As a young man he has been signally nono: with the confidence of the people of this Dis- trict, where he was educated and has lived for many years, and now, as he proposes to leave shortly for the far West, to locate in one ofour new Territories, we doubt not he will con- linve to retain the confidence and respect of all m whose midst his lot may be cast. ea <A deg ASSAULT AND BATTERY.—This morning, of- fleer Frazier Alex.
