Tue Eicnt-Hour Movewext mn New YorxK.—About four moutms ago the caulkers, with the ship-joiners, carpenters and ship- wrights in New York notified their bosses that after the 2d of April they would demand the eight-hour system. On the 2d of April, owing to the masters taking & stand against the action of the men, the strike was begun, and has now lasted nearly twelve weeks, causing a loss of 21,500,000 in wages to the strikers and nearly $10,000,006 to the fourteen ship building firms in New York. About a week since, finding that they could not attain the object for which the strike had been made, they agreed to return to work, and did work for about half a day. At noon the bosses informed the men that they ‘were willing to take them to work, but they muet promise to belong to no association nor organization which was of a trade-protective ebaracter, and which woald interfere with their employing outsiders to do caulking work.
