A. Hall, was before Justice Clayton. on the charge of having on or about the 15th of last month, forged the name of W. A. Snyder, late Captain in the uth New York cavalry, toa Treasury draft, for $200, or with Raving aided or aly ted in the commission ot he forgery.on which he obtained the money, ae haviag been arrested by the officers of the seeret service division of the Treasury. Mr. W. P. Wood, in charge of the secret service, appeared for the Government, and Major Hall onducted his defense in person Mr. Wood tes:ified that he had ordered the srrestof Mr. Hali. the case having been re- ferred to him by the Solicitor, who enclosed a letter of Treasurer Spinner, stating that the iraft made payable to the order of Captain snyder. had been issued and receipted for b Hall; that some days subsequently the dr: sppearing to be endorsed by the payee, was cashed at the Treasury last mon' A short time ago, the Treasurer receiving a letter from Snyder inquiring if such draft had been issued. he suspected that a forgery had been com- mitted, and asked the investigation. Mr. Wood offered this letter in evidence, as also he letter of Capt. Snyder. Mr. Hall oojected to the reception of the Jetter until its geauine- ness was first proved. Mr. Wood testified that atter Mr. Hall had been arrested he acknowl- edged to bim and to Gen. Spinner that he was responsible for the appearance of Capt ders name, the draft being so endorsed bj lirectien Several other witnesses were worn, who testified to Hall having receryed he draft, and to the money having been paid. Major Hall called but one witness who tes- titled that the endorsement of Snyder's name m the draft was not in Hall’s hand-writing. Mr. Hail argued that he should be dis- ebaryed, that there was no evidence that he bad com ted the forgery: that another party bad commicted the crime, it crime it was, and that be could not be held responsible for the rime another. He also argued that the firm to which he belonged (G. M. Van Buren «& Co.) held a power of attorney from Snyder authorizing them to use his pame and obtain 4 settlement of the claim, and that having re- ceived the money they were unable, for want of the address of Snyder. (which they had ob- tained but recently.) to transmit it. Mr. Wood followed, contending that he had made out aecase, and quoted several author- jes to show that being am accessory to forger: is acrime, among others Ist Hrightley, p. 204. wrticle 13, or 3d i, and Statutes, Justice Clayton stated that there were sev- pomts of law he wished to consider, aud would reserve his decision, but in the mean- tume. if Capt. Taompson. teacher, Monday, showed that sehool to be on the same high foot- img @\ on previous years. The attendance of eachers and others interested in the cause of education was, a usual, very large. The ex- witoing Visitors present were Messrs. Krown, Holmead and Cassell. The examination was nducted chiefly by Messrs. Brown, Z. Rich- ards and T.C©. Connolly. Of the forty-three scholars on the roll forty-two were present The examtnation of the first class in grammar was severe and tediOus, though the analysis f sentences was omitted by the examiner, ‘ir Brown. The answers were always ready, a delivered with unhesitating clearness in music the school showed much progress. The female scheols have heretofore carried off pretty much all the lanureis in this depart- ment, but the exercises at this school showed bat the boys are now taking thelead| Master George W. Connor presided at the piano, and ~letted great praise for his fine playing: and tbe singing of Masters Geo. C. Abell, Albert Dutton, Eddie Hay, Thos. Cridler and Thos. McArdle was excellent. Among the compo- siiens read, Commerce” and ‘The Immor- ality of the Soul,” both by George Davis; ~Kuins of Time,” by Thos. McArdle; and “The Newspaper.” by E. C. West, indi- cated ability of a high order. The exer. ses in reading were admirable, and we ean but notice the superior manner in which Master Giles Heilprin acquitted him- self in this most important branch of education. The reading, English grammar and spelling elicited the most favorable comments from the spectators. In the test ef spelling and dic- tation of sentences more than a dozen boys were without an error, while as many more had but one word misspelled. Owing to the ume eonsumed in the examination of classes first called, several of the advanced studies were omitted, mucbD to the evident chagrin of the bright-eycd pupils. who were thus de- barred from showing the progress they had made in those branches. The very warm com- mendation given to the school by the gentie- men—Messrs. T. E. Lioyd, Connolly and Kichards—who by invitation of Mr. Holmead addressed the pupils, was sufficient, however, to show that enough bad been gone through with to enable the examiners and spectators to form an opinion of the merits of the school and of the judicious mode of training pursued by its experienced teacher. Male Intermediate School of the first dis- trict ‘nthe barement o: Union Chapel, under Miss Amelia Kirk, was examined on Monday by Meeere. Tustin and Brown. The scholars showed marked progress, especially in writing. Miss Kirk bas 20 scholars to transfer to the gTammar school. — EXHIBITION OF THE PREPARATORY Dz- »akt MENT OF CoLuMBIA COLLEGE. —On Mon- day evening the aunuai exhipition and distri- bution of prizes of the Preparatory Depart- ment of Columbia College took place in the first Baptist Church, 13th street, in the pre- sence of a large audience, wh> were much gratified with the exercises, which consisted of recitations and dialogues, interspersed with music, and were concluded with the confer- ring of certificates and medals on the meritor- ious scholars. By. Samson, in a neat little ad- dress, presented the m-dals and certificates, and highly complimented the boys receiving the bighest bonors, and many friends of our public schools were highly delighted with the iact that the highest honors were conferred om pupils from the public schools. Fabey Franklin, from the 4th district school. (Mr. J. E. Lelgpee sage teacher.) and Thos. Bremmer- man, ot Ist district, (Mr. S. John Thom- «on's) wereso nearly equal for the first hon- ors, that it was with great difficulty that a de- cision could be made. The first honor was Rnally awarded to Franklin, and the second nor to Bremmerman. In the second class, Harry Harkness, Eugene Atkinson, and La- u Bremmerman, all of the ist district, stood jual for the first honor. and it being impossi- ble to discriminate, the first honor was award- edtoesch. Itis heat | of notice too that the five boys named cai off the highest prizes tor punctuality and deportment. —_——¢——— Tae New Market-Hovse Movenent.— Yesterday afternoon, an adjourned meeting of the butebers and other stall holders ot Centre Market was held at Tem: ce Hall, but Owing to the extreme heat ttendance was not so large as at the previous meeting. The officer followed him. At the corner of 12th street the horse threw the man and turned back to the wagon stand. The match horse at the wagon neighed as his mate returned, and awoke the wagoner, who was asleep in his ve- bicle. Soon after the thief returned to the wagon, and officer Tucker arrested him.
