After about fifteen honorable discharged sol- diers had been admitted to membership and the trausaction of some other business of no public interest, the meeting adjourned. ——_o—_—_- Ropseny aNd ATTEMPTED MuRDER.—The Alexandria Gazette says that on Wednesday night, about 10 o’cleck, six negro men from the Freeamen's Village, at Arlington, after failing to obtain, by means of talse representa- Uons, 3 quiet entrance into the house of James Mertbur, which is situated on the west side of the Washington iurnpike, just beyona Four- mile Run, kicked open the door, and, after knocking down Merthur, and shooting his wife through the right breast, robbed the bouse of its entire contents. They tried to choke Mrs. Merthur to death before they shot ber. The one who knocked Merthur down was told to kill him. They fired at a litile girl—Mertbur’s daughter—who was shrieking trom the window. So intent were the villains, bowever, upon thieving, and so fearfal were they that one would steal more than another, that Mertbur was allowed to escape, and he making off rapidly tothe neighboring house for asestance, they became alarmed and hastily decamped. Mrs. Merthur recognized two of them, who had been in the habit ef coming to the house for milk, and who had, before kick- ing Open the door, tried to obtain an entrance into the house, a} acre oe of buying more milk.
