Farquaar and Messrs Murphy and Gleasou, who contracted to ex- cavate the deposites from the extern section of the canal, sre removing tbe dam at Third street, ard already, tor the first ume in 2vout fifteen years. there is astream of water run- ning through it. The terms of the contract Were that this portion of the work should be doue in sixty days, and notwithstanding pre- dictions of wiseacres to the contrary, through the energy of the contractors, backed by Chief Engineer Severson and his assistant, Mr. Shil- len, they have succeeded in finishing it up in less then half the time specified, and now there ts from Third street to the Eastern Branch 54 feet water at low tide. The bridge sed by the Alexandéria railroad, jus} south of the Mary- jand avenue bridge, resting on tressle work set on stone foundations stll remains, but the company are having an fron sgn constracted which they will put in the place of the bridge obstruction in afew days. The railroad com- pany has obligated itself to remove any ob- struction in its vicinity, and after this is done the cana’ will be open to ravigation from Third street down to its mouth. Notwithstanding the idea put afloac by mis- ebievous parties, that sickness would ensue consequent upon the canal being excavated, not & single case of illness has occurred among the men employed—the number per day aver- aging pnt tiv. As far as known, no sickness whatever among the residents in the vicinity of the has oceurred which can be atirid- uted to ork. Not only is the accomplish- me of this work & great sanitary measure, but the Government and many citizens haye been benefitted by having their property on the lew grounds filled up, and with material not often equalled for gardening purposes. This is the first portion of the plan tor the improvement of the canal which has been vomplered, 2nd at this rate the whole work Will be speedily finished. Messrs. Urown & Gait are hard at work on the cunseway, and have a werfal stexm pile-driver at work, which s already set about balt the number of piles required. On reaching the Gepth of the sewer nothing was seen of the men, but on clearing away the dirt from the sewer, which had been bricked over, the men. supported by many to have been at least badly injured, were found safe and sound, they hav- ing, when they observed the bank giving way, had the presence of mind terun into the sewer. After tbey got up to the street they quietly walked away. Several officers of the Fourth Ward were on the ground at the time, and did efficient service im keeping the crowd from breaking down more of the bank. ——— 6 Boarp or HEaLttTH.—The regular meeting of the Board of Health was held on Monday af- ternoou, Gen. Peter F. Bacon in the Uhair and Dr. Dove Secretary. Mr. Drake, from the Second Ward, made a verbal report in relation to the condition of the sewer between F and G ard lith and 12th streets, and it was recommended that the nui- sance in the sewer be removed and it be arched over. Dr. Smoot, from the committee on disinfect- ants. nade a report recommending the use of the Ridgew Disinfectant; which report was adopted. Nuisances reported by Dr. Smoot and Dr. Walsh were referred te, the Metropolitan po- lice. The Secretary reported that he was unable to carry out the law in relation to a_ nuisance on F street, between 13th and /th streets, but the matter had been laid before the Grand Jury. ———— ee Levy Covrt.—The regular monthly meeting of the Levy Ceurt of Washington Connty was beid on Monday at the City Hall; all the mem. bers present. Several petitions asking for the opening of additional roads were received and referred. The cotamittee on police reperted adversely on several applications for tavern licenee, and they were discharged from their further consideration. The of Police buving merged the First Precinct with the Exgbth, the Court directed the discontinuance of the station-honse in Uniontown. Appro- priations of $1,000 for each school district were made for repairing the roads. Richard H. Burr was elected a school commissioner in the fifth district, and Messrs. Christopher Adams, Daniel Lightfoot, John E. Chanpell, B. T. Swart, David Miller, and W. M. Taylor and Richard Hayden, indicted for the larceny of horses in two cases, a nolle pros was entered. Milburn Hunter, under an indictment for manslaughter, was releaved fromm jail on bail. Yesterday, be case of Jobn Ward, indict- ed for presing a counterfeit Treasury note, a nolle pros was entered. Mary Blake, indicted for keeping a bawdy house was convicted and sentenced to pay & fine of $500 and to stand committed to jail un- til the fine be paid. * Jeremiah Carter, mdicted for larceny, was founda gainy and sentenced to W days in jail. Simon White. indicted for stealing swivels, &c.. was convicted. —* Onrnass’ Court, Judge Purell. — Yester- day, the will of the late Phebe Mitchell, be- ueathing ber estate (personal and real) to her Zrasheors Margaret Ann Smith, was filed and fully proved.
