The Official Returns. The election for Mayor, sefen Aldermen, and twenty-one Councilmen in this city, yes- terday, passed off quietly, and with but little excitement in most of the wards, owing, per- baps, to the fact that none but local. issues were made. There was considerable good- bumored rivalry among the candidates and their supporters, but none of the acrimony and bitterness which characterize such con- tests when party lines on national political questions are strictly drawn. Ample arrange- ments bad been made by Superintendent Rich- ards, @f the Metropolitan Police force, ‘for the preservation of order: but, fortunately, there ‘was no occasion to call in requisition any re- serve force, as there was no disorder, and but very httle drunkenness. As we predicted yes- terday, Mr. Wallach received a majority in every ward butthe Sixth. His re-election was considered certain, but when the returns were announced Iast night, his friends were agree- ably surprised to find his majority larger even than the most sanguine had anticipated. The official returns in each ward are as fol- appeared and aridressed low Ciuzens: [am results Of te-day. these of you, my ge stems. 10 tor ar ay eras sprees SS BSeaD ys under a lasting Sey fo greater could bave peen ie poment than tuey have bestowed upon me. \% The result to-day is, I take it, am emphatic endorsement of ny Sdministration of this city 20” years past. 1t is an approval of the efforts that have been made to bring the blessings of the sehooi 8: tem within the reach of all, and proves con- ¢ usively that, with me, thes think the maguift- cent school structures whieh are now exciting the admiration of our sister cities are prefera- ‘bie to the miserably dilapidated old tenements which disgraced our city. That the transition from the old aind much- complained.of volunteer fire Se to that which now affords so m safety and security to the public, meets your warmest approbation. ‘that our efforts to afford the citizens of Washington what is so necessary and essential tothe comfort, convenience, and health—per- fect sewerage—though it may be at your ex- pense, is appreciated. That the improvements made in your streets,so much abused alter. nately for dust and mud, by pavin; is though costly te you, borne with patience. In fine, the result of to-day satisfies me that you, like myself, are in favor of making Wash- ingten & model city, worthy of the name of its illustrious founder, and the metropolis of tne great nation we are, and are te becomb. The burden that has been put upon us by those who laid out this city of such unparai- leled width and extent, for the purposes of the general Government, entitled us toexpect some nid from the general Government in carrying out the intentions of General Washington. In this, my friends, I am sorry to say we are mistaken, and that I find, to my regret, that whatever is to be done towards making the metropolis of the Union worthy of this great, nation must be mainly done by ourselves and paid for by ourselves.
