THE CAUCUS YESTERDAY. The Republican Senators held a caucus of | some honrs yesterday, in which the question of reconstruction and the time for an adjourn- ment of Congress weve discussed. ‘The sentiment of the cancus was unani- mously against the thind section of the recoay struction measures, atleast no voice was raised, in its behalf. Various substitates for the third section ‘were discussed; but the proposition most favored was one exclnding from holding Fed- eral office those who deserted the United States Congress and ammy and navy to take Ppart.in the rebellion; aleo, the members of the Con- federate Congress, the Confederate Cabinet, Confederate diplomatic’ agents, Confederate military officers of the rank of Major General and Brigadier General, and Vonfederate nayal officers of the higher grade, &c. It was claimed that the reconstruction meas- ures, modified in some such manner, could be passed in the Senate by the reqnisite two- thirds vote, and something to spaze. Concerning an adjournment, the current feeling seemed to be in favor of remaining in session untilthe middle of Judy, unless the leading business of Congress is soomer dis- THE TRIAL OF JEFF. DAVIs. The paragraph going the rounds of the news- papers under the authority of “it is stated,” setting forth that a new indictment against Jefferson Davis has been drawn up in the At- torney General's Office since Mr. Speed’s re- turn to Washington, and that Judge Under- wood's indictment will be withdrawn and the new one substituted, we have the best author- ity for saying is ineorrect. Although some ehange may Le made in the indictment pre- sented by the grand jury of Norfolk. there is Bo reason to believe that another will be sub- stituted, it has been stated that the trial of Jef. Davis will commence on the Ist of June at Richmond. We are satisfied that it will not «commenced for at least four months after the Ist of June. So much for rumors. FREEDMEN LEAVING TEXAS.
