Matting- ¥ secretary. The Convention is be ogy of delegates from some thirty organizations, each of which Sreentitied to not more than five representa- tives, but some send bat three en ne ent number being about one hundred. here were less than Palf of the number present, but the lobby was full of the “swarming & wamp- ers,” and it was apparent from the commence- ment, that lively times were to be seen. Mr. J. R. Waltemyer, Corresponding Secre- tary, read a letter from the a Ap the Workwwgmen’s Union of New York city, stating that eleyen hundred caulkers in tbat city bave struck for the eight hour system, and all, with . ¢ exception of two men. are out of work, and asking for a donation. The Secretary laid before the meeting the fol- lowing letter from Mr. Busby: WASHINGTON, May 23, 1866.—Jokn Q. Larman, Es., Committee of Workingmen’s Convention, 1st Ward.—Sir: 1 bave the bonor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of May 21, accompanied by a copy ot the «Workingmen’s iatiorm for the ensuing June election.” cnow ing, from long experience, that eight hours laber per day is amply sufficient tor all the wants of society, and believing that the time employed im labor beyond that limit, is ot no benefit to society, bata great injury to the workingmap, that the hours wasted in unnec- essary labor! should be devoted to the improve- ment of his mental and socis! condition, that all legitimate means should be resoried to to ac- complish a reform so much needed, and that legal epactments fixing the time that shall comstitute “a day's work” are not only night, but eminently proper, in the present condition of our city, 1 heartily subscribe to your ~pistform™ and it shali receive my un- conditional support. Very respecifully your obedient servant, N.N. Easpy. Mr. Waltemyer stated that the members of che committee to interrogate candidates desired tereport separately, and Mr. Larman reported hat he bad received no decisive answers from the candidates of the First Ward. Mr s H. Keed presented letters from Wm. Kutherford and George T. Raub. candi- dates in the Second Ward. endorsing the plat- form of the convention. Mr. Lansdale, of the Fourth Ward, submit- ted let from Hon. Richard Wailach, Elij ih Edmo: oo, Chas. H. Andersor, R. B. Owens, Robert Hall and W. H. Nally endorsing the platiorm The er of Mayor Wallach is as follows TY, May 2d, 1566.—Jehn 1¥. ‘ommittee Workingmen’s Co- Ward.—Sir: My engagements ‘his morning, and the lateness of the r§ o'clock, on last evening, at which F of the 2ist, covering the form of a )ropounding an iuterrogatory to me t my hoase, must be my apology for send thisto your dwelling as re- nnot suppose that ary one at all fa- th our municipal affairs could pos- orantof my having approved the ng eight hours a legal day's work for yees of this Corporation, recommend- ur convention, and passed by the City far back as early in January last, ts well as the fact that was at that time, and probably am even pow, the only person who has officially approved such a measure, 1 may be excused for expressing some surprise that My po-ition is not sufficiently well understood by those to whom it is a matter of so much im portance, as to render interrogation of me on that pot unnecessary. The evidence thus afforded by the very best test—my past oilicial action—ought to be an assurance of my sympathy with the objects of your convention, and is @ guarantee of my readiness to approve the bill (C. No. 179,) adopted by the workingmen as platform: and if pot, certainly no promise made by a candidate on the eve of an election could give greater assurance of his willingness to do so. or better entitle him to confidence. Very respectfully, Ricwarp WaLLacn. The members of the committee from other wards were not ready to make a report. Mr. Beron moved that the communications be received and approved. Mr. Lansdale moved that the Convention go into an election for a candidate for Mayor. Mr. Beron argued that it was not in the Province of the Convention to make nomina- uobs. Mr. Canfield said that the Convention was formed for a specific purpose, which was plainly set forth in the constitution, and that it Was not formed for the pu’ of taking any action in relation to nominating candidates. He came to the Convention for the purpose of aiding the legitimate objects of the Convention, and was satisfied that some of the members were taking & course an istic to the con- stitution, and which, if followed, would lead to bad effects, probably the total failure of the esuse in this District. , Mr. Emmons stated that the principal objec- tion to Mr. Wallach was his declining to attend the w orkingmen’s mass meeting on the first of November last. Several inquiries were here made as to the answer of Mr. Wallach to attend the meeting. [The follow: is the letter in question : Crry Hatt, ee ae D.C., . me 1565.—Jos. W. Mattingly, Esq., Secretary of the Workingmen’s Convention .—Sir: I have receiyed yours of the 26th, informmg me “that bya vote of the Convention, you, as its Secretary, were directed to extend to me an invitation to attend a mass meeting of this District on the evening of the 3ist inst.” i am sincerely grateful to the Convention for their consideration and the honor intended me. and to you for the very complimentary manner the invitation has been conveyed to me.
