Ww. A. Males in the Chair and Mr. M. Marceron as Messrs. Cratty and flarceron, trom the com- mittee on the subject, f»ported that meetings ‘would be held in the other wards to take ac- tion in regard to the movement. Mr. Dodge said that he was not @ practical ‘wo. man and would like to know if he could make a motion. The Unair answering affirmatively Mr. D. ™oved that two others be placed on the com- Mittce so as to baye one member for each ward. Motion was adopted and Messrs. A. Dodge and T. D. Sndiiwan were appointed. Mr. Mulloy (Mr Mead in the chair) moved that a vote of thanks be tendered to Mayor Watiach for ais prowptitade in putting into effect the eight bour law—he baving instructed the Commissioners of the wards to work their men but eight bours from the Ist instant. Mr. bodge was sorry thatthe name of any person was mentioned, and he could not boi- ster up anyone. He was opposed to bringing politics iato a meeting of the werkingmen Mr. Mulloy disclaimed any attempt to bol- Ster Up Any one, and asserted that it was not a political dodge on his part, but pe simply de- sired to give credit where it was due. Mr. Dodge replied that the Mayor had only obeyed the law as by the Councils, and be moved that they be included in the resolu- © tou of thanks. Mr. Mulloy accepted the amendment, and ‘be resolution was unanimously adopted. Mr. Mead moved that the cemmittee be in- structed to draft and obtain signers to a memo- rial to the Councils, asking that the work of grading and gravyeling the streets shall here- after be done by day's work. Mr. Dodge asked what was intended. He had not yet fully understood the object of the meeting. Mr. Mead said at present it was proposed to ask that no more streets shall be graded and gtaveled by contract. Mr Marceron understood and conteaded that the resolution adopted st the previous meeting referred to all contracts, Mr. Mead ana others understood the resolu- tion as be had stated it and the vote by which the resolution was adopted, and after being amended so as to refer to grading and grayel- img contracts only, it was adopted. Mr. Mead’s motion forthe committee to get up memorial to Congress was adopted, and the meeting adjourned. Meetine gr D.C. VotcntTEER ARMY AND Navy Orrickrs.—An adjourned meeting of the volunteer officers of the army and navy from the District of Columbia, was held at ‘Temperance Hall last evening, Col. James A. ‘Tait, President, im the chair. In the absence of Lieut. Edward Krause, recording secretary, Lieut. Wm. Young was appointed secretary tem. The csmmittee appointed at the previous meeting to draft a constitution for the govern- ment of the ‘organization, reperted that they bad executed their commission. The consti- tution was then read by sections by Ensign Mockabee, chairman of the committee. Va- rious amendments in relation to meetings, &c., were made, and the constitution was adopted as amended. A setof by-laws were also pre- sented and adopted. The qualification n to render a per- son eligible to membersbip in this organization is an bonorable discharge from the United States army or navy. The object is to promote the interests of the District volunteers who aided in suppressing the rebellion, and to en- deavorto ‘obtain for members suitable positions in pabdlie or municipal offices, or employment in ordinary vocations, in preference to civi- fians. All political or religious discussions zre probibited by the rules. The reports of the committee on rooms and Advertising were received. Ad- journed. FATAL AOCIDENT.—Yesterday afternoon, Willte Zammerman, a son of Mr. H. F. Zim- merman, between 10 and 11 years, was killed by falling from a horse, near the corner of 12th and F streets. It appears that a gen- tleman rode upto the door of Mr. aie man’s residence, above G street, when le ceased, who was playing in front of the honse, asked and finaljy obtained permission to hold the horse for him. As soon as the gentleman entered the house Willie got a young man to help bim on the horse, and it started in a gen- Ue trot down 12th street toward F, and the boy es becoming frightened, fell to the cc He was carried tothe drug store of allace & Elliot, where Drs. C. A. Ware, Allen C. Harmon, W. N. Berkley, H. H. Wells and others, favoring the annexation of Alex- 2ondria to the District, were before the District Committee of the U.S. Senate yesterday, urz- ing their scheme. We did not learn whether the committee took any action. The committee of the Council and citizens appointed to prepare &@ Temonstrance against the annexation pre pared a most convincing argument, which ‘will be presented to the members of Congres< in afew days, and which, itis hoped, will bave its desired effect. The remonstrances in cireulation are, we understand, most numer- ously signed, and will alse be sent up to Con- gress.— Alezandria Gazette. eee Bust or Mayor Wattacn.—Mr. Lot Flan. nery, ® young marble- worker and sculptor of this city, bas just completed @ fall sized bust of Mayor Wallach. Those who have seen it speak im warm terms of it, not only as a work of art, but as an excellentlikeness. Mr. Flan- nery has heretofore made several busts, among others a full sized one of Rev. B. F. Wigett, of Gonzaga College, which attracted much tention at Gonzaga fair, about a year sin and recently asmali bust of President Li: coin, which is regarded by many as one of the best ever made of the late President. This of the Mayor. in which Mr. F. has succeeded so admirably, will go far towards establishing the reputation of @ young artist of our city. >—— IMrnovEMENTSs.—Messrs. George H. Plant and George W. Riggs have broken ground at the corner of 15th street and New York avenue, for a first-class building, and they propose also to ereet this season a fine row of brick resi- dences on I4th street, near the new Protestant Orphan Asylum. ve also notice a fine three-s' building on the corner of 3d street and Indiana avenue, oppente the Trinity Church, the lower portion of which is arranged for stores, and the rooms sre suitable for a boarding-house or hotel, built by Mr. Wiliam Dixon, (Coliector,) which is quite an ornament to that section of the city. —_e_—___ ORARGE OF TREsrass.— Yesterday after- noon, + Nash was arrested on the cl of trespass, preferred PY, John Douglas, by officer Morgan, who took the case before Justice ‘Walter.
