When be took charge of the Bureau he was ov-rloaded with anxiety, for there were over fi million of men castin a new situation, but it was wonderful how well they bad done and they had acted nobly. Several days ago a convention of freedmen assembled in Georgia, and requested the As- sistant Commissioner to send the men to work -to make them work. They said they did not went @ few lazy scoundrels to disgrace them just as they are coming to freedom. The same inducements to labor, &e.. give te other classes, if given these people, they wonld make equal progress if not greater. He bad had great doubts whether the colored People would be able to keep up in the race wits the Anglo-Saxon. Some say they are going to the wall, that the race willrun out—but he had come to the conclusion that they will not be far behind. In conclusion be said, when you go back to your people energize them; teil them what | have told you. Begin at the bottom in the work of elevating your race—the lowest first—- and the consequence will be that all will be elevated. As he was leaving the stand one of the mem- bers spoke to him in relation to the recent order in relation to marrigges; and he returned to the stand and sta‘ that for the present the mnaiter of s renewal of the matrimonial vows would not be pressed, but that he was going before the committee of the House to urge the passage of a lawon the subject.
