EVENING STAR. -Breapanp ButtTer.—Hall in his Journal . ef Health, gives the following bit of wisdom: Bread and butter are the only articles of food of which we never tire from early childhood to extreme old age. A pound of fine flour or indian meal contains three times as mach meat as one pound of butcher’s roast beef; and if the whole product of the grain, bran, and all were made into bread, fifteen per cent. more of nutriment would be added. lUnfortn- nately, the bran, the coarsest part of which Ves SOUnGMess to the teeth and to the rain,is ly excluded. Five hundred Is of flour give to the body thirty pounds bony element, while the same quant.ty of bran gives more than one hundred and twenty-five unds. The bone is lime, the phosphate of lime, the indispensabie aliment of health to the whole human body, from the want of the natural supply of which muiti- tudes of fo into a general decline. But swallowing phosphates in the shape of ywders orin syrups to cure these declines as little or. no effect. The articles contained in these pbosphates must pass through nature’s Jaboratory, be subject to her manipulations in alembics specially prepared by Almighty power and skill in order to frame, in plainer phrase, the shortest, safest, and infallible method giving strength to the body, bone, and brain, thereby arresting disease, and building Bp the constitution, is to eat and digest more bread made out of the whole grain, whether wheat, corn rye or oats. Correx.— When extraordinary exertion and wakefulness are needed for some emergency, strong coffee isthe best antidote against drows!- ness, as the foesof Frederick the Great once discovered to their cost. when fragrant Mocha bad enabled him to pass three days and wights without sleeping. This peculiar property makes it one of the greatest use toall whose porsuits require close and yet vivediy act attention, to those in fine, who, to use our home-bred expression, are anxious to keep “wide awake.” Hence, the French have justly called it the “intellectual drink,” and students every where will cordially accept the phrase. Tae Last “Witness” Story.—The Albany Argas says that at a recent trial in Auburn, in that State, the counsel for the government, after severely cross-examining 2 witness. snd- denty put on a look’ of severity and exclai “Mr. Witness, has not an effort been mad induce you totell adifferent story !"s«A diifer- ent story from what I havetold, sir!” «That is what 1 mean.” “Yes, sir: several persons have tried to get meto tell a different story from what I nave told but they couldn't.” “Now, sir: upon your oath, I wish to know who those persons are!” ’ “Wall, I guess you've tried ‘bout as hard as any of them.” THE Mossy Avrrair.—The Winchester Journal gives the following version of the re- } centdifficulty between Col. Mosby and the Federal soldiers at Leesburg: “We have re- ceived the following version of the disturbance occasioned by thie personage in Leesburg a few days since. He was swaggering about the street in uniform of the defunct Confederacy, when he was accosted by an officer. and re- quested to take off his uniform, or at least re- move his buttons. Tothe gentlemanly lan- guage ot the officer Mosby replied witn a re- fusal, adding that there were not Union sol- diers enough in the piace to take them off. The officer took steps to have the hero arrested, but he resisted and fired on the squad sent after hi His friends then surrounded him and took him away.” Jvupiciousty Coot.—The New Bedford Standard tells the following: “A friend of ours, who bas been untortunate enough to be taken down with the varioloid, left his board- ing-house very quietly and suddenly, as soon as the first symptoms of the disease began to manifest themselves, and took his quarters at the hospital. In omer toallay the anxiety of his landlord as to his whereabouts, hesent him & note, stating that he entertained no personal bostility towards the house, but that he did not Wish to associate with the boarders!” 87-A widow Indy of Danvill Ky., took an Orphan boy to raise, quite small, and when he arrived at the age of Is she married him, she then being in her 50th year. They lived many years together, happy as any couple. Ten Years ago they took an orphan girl to raise. Last fall the old lady died, being 96 years of age, and in seven weeks after the old man married the girl they bad raised, he being 65 years old, and she Is. ee B7 Judge Busteed, of the United States Dis- trict Court at Mobile, has rendered an impor- tantdecision. A young maa, a minor, while a passenger on board one of the Mobileand New Orleans steamers, engaged in cards and lost 2 cons:derable sum of money, really the property of bis mother. A suit was instituted tor the recovery of the money, not against the gam- bier, but the captain of the boat, and decided in favor of the plaintiff. @7-A girl five or six years old, daughter of G. C.
