Kobert Griffin, Receiving Clerk at this end of the Washington and George- town Railroad was victimized by a faithless employee to the amount of 2600 or S700. it bas been the custom of Mr. Griffin, After the receipts of each day have been turned over to him at the office to put the money in a tin box and deposit it for safety in an iron safe at Cropley’s (late Cissel’s) drug store. The next morning be would send an old man named George Fagan, who was employed to water the horses at the stand, and in whom he had con- fidence, to bring the money to the office. Yes- terday morning Fagen went tothe drugstore to get the money. The Receiver waited some time for it and it did not come, and he sent an- other messenger to see what the matter was. This messenger returned and said that the young man who had the key of the safe was gone out, but that Fagan was there waiting for at, and as soom as the young man came he would send it up. The young man came and the tin box containing 2600 or $700 was given to Fagan, who deperted, but haspet since been heard from. There isa general wish among the jaborers at the canal docks that it is true, but they do not rely upon any reports. The best assurance they cau have will be the arrival of the coal fleet. Tae Canat BaivGes.—-Editor Slar: My at- tention has been called to an editorial article in yesterday's paper, which implies that it is necessary to raise the bridges across the Che ke and Ohio Canal Company, in town, in order to allow the passage of loaded with coal and country produce nrough the town. Allow me to assure you that this is @ mistake, and that boats now daily pass under those very bridges, and up to the year 1-51 Dundreds of boats passed through the town snd through the outlet lock into the Potomac river, and the only obstacle at present to doing so is, that during the war the outlet lock was neglected and suffered to get out of Tepair, but at a comparatively small expense could be put in complete repair for effective use The bridges about which complaint more pecially ts made are on Congress, Jefferson, Wasbington, and Green streets. They were ail made thirty-seven years ago, when the anal was first started. and constructed in the Tost durable manner of cut stone, arched over the canal. and paved on the grade on the street on top, and owing to the location of George- town, on the side of a hill, sloping towards the river, this grade could not be altered Without making it almost impossible to d: a Josd trom Water to Bridge street by any of the streets mentioned. The wooden bridges} over the carnal on Potomac and Market streets have been raised above their former grade, and the consequence is, itis almost impossible to get on them with a load trom the lower side of the street. All boats built om the canal can pass under our bridges, either loaded or empty, ¢x- cept ® certain class built at Cumberland, with extracrdinary high cabins and stables forward, and these, I'am informed. are rapidly going out of use, as all new boats are built precizely Bs they are on other canals, an@ should be on this, to accommodate themselves to the canal on which they are intended to travel; and, to | pe misapprehension, I will say that these igh cabins do not add at all to the capacity of tbe boats, but are simply a matter of conveni- ence to the mm. and so far asthe writer bas acqnaintance with canals, and he has con- siderable, are built far higher than those used on boats on any other canal in the country Water Street Mercouant.
