Tue PHILADELPHIA TRAGED Y—Indictment of Probst by the Grand Jury.—The Philadelphia rand jury Parag 2 morning founda true bin against Antoine Probst for the murder of the Deering family. The prisoner was brought into court and arraigned at | p. m., after much degal delay. The prisoner having no counsel, the Court assigned him Messrs. John P. O'Neill and J. C. Welbert. The prisoner at firsteaid he did not wish any counsel at all, Dut subsequently withdrew his objection to baving counsel. After a conversation with the prisoner, Mr. O'Neill asked that the ar- pment be tponed until himself and his colleague could be afforded an opportunity to examine the bills of indictment. It is understood that Probst expressed a wil- linguess to plead guilty te the indict charging him with the murder of UVorneli Carey. The district attorney designs, how- ever, to try him upon a bill charging him with the murder of the Commonwealth's officer in the strength of bis case, without availing him- selfof the pretended confession of the mur- cerer. From information received from persons ‘who belonged to the same regiment and com- any as Probst, it is learned that he was a Lounty-sempet, who had entered the service several times, and had received large bounties. ‘They allege also that he shot his thumb delib- erately, in order togain his discharge. Among his comrades his character was anything but enviable. It has beena principle with me, and 1 thank God the great principle has been es- tablished that wherever any individual, in the language of a distinguished orator and states- man, treads American soil, his soul swells within him beyond the power of chains to bind him in appreciation of the great trath that he stands forth redeemed, regenerated and disenthralled by the genius of universal emancipation! {Applause.) Then let me mingle with you in celebration of the day which commenced your freedom. I do it in sincerity and truth, and trust im God the blessings which have been conferred may be enjoyed and appreciated by you, and that you may give thema proper direction. There is something for all to do. You have high and solemn duties to perform, and you ought to remember that freedom is not a mere idea. It must be reduced to practical reality. Men in being free have to deny themselves many things whieh seem to be embraced inthe idea of universal freedom. It is with you to give evidence to the world, and the people of the United States whether you are going to appreciate this great boon as it should be, and that you are worthy of being freemen. Then let me thank you with sinceri- ty for the compliment you bave paid me by passing through here to-day and paying your respects tome. I repeat again, the time will come when you will know who has been your best friend, and who has not been your frend from mercenary considerations.
