New Counterfeits. yi Peterson’s Counterfeit Detector for April 1s gives the following descriptions of new coun- | terfeits whith have been recently issued : | Treasury Notes—l0s—A new issue, dated | March 10, ite2. The red seal is badly executed, as is also the border of the note, which is made j UP of repetitions of the letter X. General ap- pearance bad. A great number are in circula- ton. 50s, United States Treasury. (greenbacks, ) are in circulation from an entirely new plate, said to be the best counterfeit yet made of the government notes. So look out for them, as some few have taken them. Enited States Legal Tender Notes—is counter- | fent—1 e numbers of one dollar counterfeit greephacks are in circulation. Excepting a few minor discrepancies, the spurious note is an H exact fac simile of the genuine BUI. The genc- | ral ince is also very good. The green imk is of a somewhat lighter shade than that weed on the genuine, and some rts of the | mote look scratchy and biurred. The figures i onthe green seroliwork on the lower right quarter of the note are printed in green; in the | genuine they are white. The head of Chase is | darker. Bill has a coarse appearance. Ss, imitation—the portrait on the right and the figure of Liberty on the left are rather @oarse. Well calculated to deceive. i 5s and 10s raised from ts. Portrait of Chase cn upper left corner. ir, imitation—the portrait of Lincoln on the left end is very dark, end the eyes very poor while the toes of the female on ihe right end can searcely be seen. On the genuine they are very distinct. Look out for them. 20s, imitation; peorly done; engraving coarse, and the bill looks blurred. The green ink used is bghter than the genuine. The diesand 2s are one-eighth of an inch larger than the genuine. Sés, altered from 2s; in the genuine 50s the signature of the register is on the left and the treasurer on the right end of the bill. In the altered note they are both on the right end, with | two strips of lathe work between them. i Ses, imitation. They areso well done that all the banks refuse thers. 10s, imitated. Upper left, spread eagle sit- ting on arock. The general appearance of the Bill is good. The wings of the eagie are coarse | and the clouding streaky. The imprint of the American Bank Now Company at the top is Jarger than the geunine. On the right end of the back of the bill the 100 in the circles are in- verted thus: “100.7 In the genuine the 100 in ¢ireles on the left end read thus: “I>? in the counterfeit they are thus: “lw.” The paper is alto beavier. Houston, Texas, is growing rapidly in busi- Bess and population. Three cotton manu- factories are in process of erection, all in very competent hands. The Nashville papers are fall of news items inting to great social disturbances and wiessness throughout Tennessee. One bundred and sixty-eight cases of small bn were reported in the Chattanooga Bbospital t week. The territory of Texas is so large, and the interests of the east and west sections so dis- similar, that some of the citizeus are in fay ur of a division of the State. Mr. W. B. Edmonson, living some three or four miles from Selma, Alabama, was killed in most cold blooded and atrocious manner on ghe evening of the Wth instant. He was called outto the door, when he was instantly shot down by a party who made good their escape. In Missouri several court-houses have been burned recently, it is supposed by returned rebels, who €xpect prosecution, and hope thus to destroy evidences of their guilt. The better rtion of returned rebels are removing their ties from the State. A frame house, situated on Napoleon Aye. The New Orleans Picayune of the “1st says the steamer William Butler, and all 9n board — some forty-five persons—were arrested by the military authorities for the alleged murder ofa soldier belonging to the suth United States Colored Infantry. A RECREANT Wirz.—On Wednesday eve- j Bing last, a Mrs. Stirling, the wite of the Pro- | prietor of ahair tonic known as “Stirling's | Ambrosia,” was upon the promenade with a | citizen named Charlies Jackson, formerly a | maker of patent medicines. Mrs. Stirling was | bandeomely dressed. A picture of her, with | bair about three feet long, embellishes the bot- | ties of hair tonic in question. She has been in | the babit of coming from New York, ostensibly to visit her mother, who resides in this eity. Her husband, it seems, was led to believe that she did not come here to visit her parent, but ‘that Jackson inveigied her from herhome. He met the twain, with arms lovingly locked, at #th and Chester streets. He gave them into the custody of a reserve policeman. Tey entered bail for $1,200 each to appear tora hearing on cng ionomers As she went out, Mrs. Stir- ling deliberately informed Alderman Beitler that she would rather have Charley, poor as be was, than to live with her husband, with alibie money. On Friday the parties didn’t sppeer. Mr. Stirling, upon sober, second thought, concluded to let his recreant wife gO ber way. When he cansed her arrest he did not know how far matters had gone. At this time she was receiving aid from our Overseer Of the Poor, and continued todoso until about nine months ago, when she was -cut off” from the books, owing to the fact that she got mar- ried again.
