They had come up to the support of the President of the United States because they knew him to be honest and firm and national. He denied thata citizen of Washington could be otherwise than in favor of the Union. There ‘were differences of opinion; some thought it t to let the Southern States go out and 'y would soon return, and others favored the use of force to bring them back. They had the Southern States when they were not Rational, and now they see some of the North- ern States the same way, and as before Wash- m will remain true to the Union. - Bowie, of Md.—Did I understand that meeting was for Washington only? goMr. Washington.—I so understand it. Mr. Bowie Well, 1 came on imvitation, and i sup) Iam asympathizer. (Laughier.} Mr. Washington proceeded to say that he had mot met a Washingtonian who was in favor of dissolution. Cries of order here arose from all quarters, and Mr. A. Dodge having succeeded in making himself beard, asked, “What is before the Meeting?” A voice—Col. Washington. [Laughter.} Mr. Berret, after several attempts, succeeded in getting the attention of the Chair, and stated that be made no motion, but had simply asked for the committee further time. He was gratified that the sentiment that no Washing- tonian could wish for a dissolution of the Union had been expressed. They found now in President Johnson a champioa of principle and the defender of the Constitution He knows that the salvation of the country rests on the Constitution. They had come with no political ends in view: but, casting aside all party ties, air said that he had come to the meet- — bad come up to the support of the Presi- jent. Col. Washington arose to speak, when Mr. F. A. Kiopfer, Dr. Clayton, Mr. A. Dodge, ali Attempted to speak at the same time, amidst cries of “Order,” “Take # vote,” &c. Dr. Clayton raised a point of order. Mr. Klopfer—1l want to explain the object of the committee—— Cries of “Order.” Mr. Washington proceeded to speak. Mr. Gary moved that the committee have un- til Friday night to report. Mr. Hoover—I would ask that Col. Wash- ington be allowed to proceed. Col. Florence attempted to make a point of order that the question was debatable. Col. Washington contended that he had the floor and proceeded to speak, remarking that he would serve under no President of the club chosen from a State. Colonel Florence called Colonel Washington to order. Col. Washington moved that the committee be instructed to report the names of fo persons @s officers but those as residents of the District of Columbia. Mr. F. A. Klopfer seid that the object of the Meeting was toembrace every State and denied that the movement was gotten up to aid office- seekers, and the intimation that such was the case came with ill gra from Colonel Wash- ington Ones of “Order,” during which Mr. Klopfer held the floor, aud Dr. Allen attempted to get it. He was a resident of a State—merely a sojourner here, and it the narrow-mindedness he had ob- served has practical effect, he could not be a member of the club. They should take an ex- ample from the enemy, who is wily, and does not confine bimself to a locality. © regretted that personalities had been engaged ia. Col. The participants being impatient commenced to call for question, an adjournment, &c., and before any vote was taken on the proposition to appoint & committee an adjournment was made. ——_+_¢—— ARREST OF THE MuRpERER or HeNLEY.—It will be recollected that on the night of the first day of January, 1866, a man named Jack Hen- ley, a white man, was shot and killed on the bigh road, near Offut’s cross roads, in Mont- gomery county, Maryland. The sup murderer, a colored man named Jacob Diggs, disappeared from the county and nothing was heard from him until yesterday morning, when Mr. Geo. S. Garrett, who formerly resided near Offul’s cross roads, and who was weil acquainted with the par- ticulars of the occurrence, met the murderer on Seventh street, aud_ immediately proceeded to the Seventh Ward Station-honse to secnre the services of anoffieer to arrest him. Officer German was despatched to arrest him, and in company with Mr. Garrett he proceeded to the Sixth-street whar{, and received informa- tion at astore in the vicinity that aman cor- responding to the description they gave of Diggs bad gone toward the brick yards, sitn- ated near New Jersey avenue. They at once started in pursuit, and about2 o’clock p. m., the officer eaptured the murderer at Eliason’s brick yard, on N street south, near F\ net. After his arrest Diggs made a statement that on the evening of January ist he was walking along the road near Offut’s cross roads, and met Henley and his brother-in-law, 2 man named Magruder. After some conyersition Heniey proposed a game of cards. and the three went to Mazruder’s honse, where they commenced to play for whisk Henley won the first came, and Diggs furnished the whis- key from a flask that he carried in his pocket, Henley and his brother-in-law, Magruder. both partaking of it. Diggs then won a game, and Henley not being able to produce any whiskey, Magruder proposed to stake his shot- gun against a quarter of a doliar for another game. Diggs won and the gun was handed over tohim. When Diggs was about leaving the house Magrader offer to purchase the gun, but he refused to se’ He then started down the road and Henie: 1 Magruder followed, expressing the intention of taking the gun by force; wherenpon Dizes turned upon his pursuers and discharged the gan, the load taking effect upon the person of Henley, and causing hisdeath.
