The officers and teachers of the Sunday Schools Of this city held the: regular monthly meeting at the Foundry M. E. Courch on Monday eve- ning. The various schoels were represented by delegates of officers and teachers as fol- lows :—Foundry, 16: E-street Baptist, 1; Fourth Presbyterian, i; Wesley Chapel, 6; Young Men's Chnstian ociation Missions, 1; Mc- Kendree Chape St. Paul's English Luthe- ran, 6; First Baptist, 5; New York avenue Presbyterian, 2. A large number of the older scholars of the schools were also present, and, with visitors, filled the house. A novel and interesting feature in the exer- cises of the evening was the public instruction of a class of scholars by the secretary of the Union upon the subject of the « Transfigura- tion.” Resolutions passed by the Maryland State Sunday School Con veniier, at the annual ses- sion in Baltimore in December last, inviting the District of Columbia Sunday schools to unite with them in their conventions hereafter to be held, by sending delegates to the same, were presented by the Rev. G. Owens, Gen- eral State Agent of the Maryland Sunday School Association, with appropriate remarks, und the mvitation of the association was ac- cepted. Notice was given that at the next meeting a Motion would be made to organize the Union more fully <: the election of a President and Treasurer. It was announced also that a class would then be publicly instructed by Mr. Richards, of the Pcccel Baptist Church, to il- Justrate the method followed in that school. Upon the invitation of the pastor of the First Baptist Church, (13th street.) it was resolved that the next monthly meeting of the Union be held there. i Deats or Captain CrowLey.—The many friends of Captain Samuel T. Crowley, 4th U S. Infantry, in this city, will regret ‘to learn that on Saturday last he died at Fort Niagara, near Buffalo, New York, (where he was sta- tioned) from a disease of the liver. Captain Crowley was well and favorably snown in the army, and in this city where his arents reside. In 1561 when the Washington Zouaves were organized he was chosen second Lieutenant and beld that position during the time the Iamented Ellsworth commanded the organization. When the latter left Washington for New York to organize the “Fire Zouaves” the First Lieutenant, Jonn T. Powell, took the ition ef Captain and Mr. Crowley that of First Lieutenant, in which he served in the memorable *three months campaign.” After the Zouaves were discharged from service Captain Crowley received an appointment as Second Lieutenant in the 4th U.S. Intantry and served with that regiment throughont the ‘War, receiving at the battle of the Wiiderness ® wound in the arm from which he never entirely recovered. For his bravery on the field he was promoted to a First Lieutenancy and subsequently brevetted a Captam, which position he held at bis death. He was a son of Mr. Patrick Crowley of this city. His remains have been brought to this city and his funeral will take place this after- noon. —__e——_— ASSAULTING ONE OF THE DtIPLoMaTI® Corrs.—On the 7th instant, John Hartnett, a soldier of the Sth regular cavalry, went to the residence of J. Hume Burnley, first secretary of the British Legation, on street, in the First Ward, and demanded admission, which was refused: and he knocked down the ser- vant, who was somewhat injured. Hartnett Was arrested by officer Campbell, of the Sec. ond Ward, but the party assaulted not appear- ing he was dismissed by Justice Morsell with & fine of three dollars for disorderly conduct. Mr. Burnley was in York at the time. His wife, however, witnessed the affair, and it was made known to the State Department. Superintendent Richards was requested to examine the case. Officer Campbell, acting under the Supermtendent’s orders, yesterday arrested Hartnett, and he was confined at headquarters fora hearing. Hartnett alleges that he was so drank at the time that he knows nothing about the affair. eran cinisns Srectar PoLicemMen rc te Covnty—At Aspecial meeting yesterday of the Board of Metropolitan Police Commissioners, the fol- lowing gentlemen were appointed as special police for that portion of the county lying be- tween the Sixth Ward and Bladensburg:— Messrs. The soldiers were the true martyrs to principle and country, and not such as those as would like to make themselves appear to the public as such, as we judge from the fol- lowing card which appeared the Chronicle on Saat jast, viz: Sailemesed from Ofice —J.W. Hasbrouck, Sec- retary of the National Equal Suffrage Association, was yesterday discharged from the Treasury Department, where be has held a clerkship for the Inst yearandahalf” Now sir, why should this removal b> so prominently put before the public; is it because Secretary of this Association, or is it because of services rendered the Goy- | ermment in the field! 1 haye understood there was at the same time five other gentlemen in the same Bureau, abie and efficient clerks, who received simila: notices to Mr. H., and number of others in the different bureaus, many of whom hare been soldiers. What I object to is bringing before the pablic the notice of s single removal of a person known only to a small circle of acquaintances, and never did anything for his country, when it was in danger, that entitles him tobe re- tained in office, when there are thousands of competent men who hay- bared their bosoms to the enemy's bullet, deprived themselves and tamilhes of all the comforts of life aud went forth in defiance of country and principle, who are waiting and willing to devote their time and energy in any position they may be as- signed. “Whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad.” Itis folly at this time, when the political cauldron is nearly boiling over, to at- tempt to add fuel to the flames—try to create a martyr, (asis intended by this notice of Mr H. in the Chronicle.) Removals are for two causes—first, incompetency and neglect of du- ty: second, nothing for them todo. I under- stand it is the intention of the Department to still further reduce the force; also of remodel- ing the different bureaus and retain only those found worthy and competent. 1t would bea zreat benefit to the Government and the coun- try if clerks who devote so much attention to political affairs and so little to the Govern- ment, were removed, and their places filled with qualified men, who have served their country either in the army or navy. In con- ‘lusion, let me say—Keep out of the Depart- ments all pol at clerks. Sotprer or ‘62. — FUNERAL.—Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Thos.
