The agents of England are laden with gold to carry out this plan, but they have been foiled by the detective system of the Fenian Brotherhood, which ramities society in this country, even tothe tables of Sir Frederick Bruce in Washington and the Governor Gene- ralin Canada. At the municipal elections in Maine on Monday, Hon. Nehemiah Abbott was elected Mayor of Belfast without opposition; Charles A. Shaw, Demociat, was elected Mayor of Biddeford; and Sylvanus Caldwell, Union, was elected Mayor of Augusta without oppo- sition. No nominations in opposition to the Union ticket were madein any of the wards. At Bangor, A. G. Wakefield, Union, was elec- ted Mayor without opposition; and the citizens, by @ vote of 1.297 yeas against 32 nays, decided to loan the credit of the city for $1,000,000 to the European and North American railway. A large demonstration of the Fenians in favor of Sweeny’s movement on Canada was held at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia last night. Colonel Jonn K.- Murphy pre- sided. Mr. O’Brien, P. Mehan, and ex-Con- gressman Worthington made able speeches. They were frequently applauded. Numerous subscriptions were made to the cause. In Bolton, yesterday, John Wood, alias Jack Shepherd, Jr., was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in the State prison, for larceny. He has also four years of an unfinished term to serve at Sing Sing, from which prison he recently escaped. a The examination of B.N. Mar- tha Teague, an estimable young lady, residing in the vicinity of Abbott’s Creek, in Forsythe county, N.C., committed suicideone day last week by hanging herself to the limbof a pine tree in the woods near her home. It is stated that the act was committed while in a morbid state of mind, superinduced by disappointed affections. Before starting to the yoods, she penned a brief note to her nts, in which she informed them of her design, and where they would find her body. This note was found shortly afterwards, and upon her pa- rents and friends repairing to the a desig- nated, they discovered her suspended, as stated above, but with life not quite extinct. The New York World of Saturday says that Owing to the disclosures made in that Paper of the day before, giving a pian of the campaign against Canada, the adherents of the Sweeney - Roberts wing have become suddenly reticent as regards the movement now on foot for ven- — on the British Lion and Canadian Biue Noses. Sweeney stock is now above par in con- seqrence of the rumors of the proposed inya- sion of the neighboring provinces, and there bas been a sudden fail in O'Mahony societies, owing to the distance of that gentleman's base of operations from his objective — which is understood to be Ireland.
