AMUSEMENTS TO-NIQHT. GRover's.—Bourcicault's admirable comedy _ “How She Loves Him” is having an excellent run, and large and delighted audiences greet its representation every evening. It will be repeated to-night with the farce of the “Artful Dodger.” MetzenotT Hatt.— Mendelssohn's grand orstorio of “St. Paw by the Washington Philharmonic Society, under the direction of Dr. J. P. Caulfield, will be presented this eve- ning, the svlo parts by Messrs. George Simp- @J._R. Thomas. This announcement fill Metzerott Hall Hatt, Island.—The fair of Eastern ». 7. 1. O. O. F., still continues and is ed. TeRBURY.—*“That Rascal Jack,” “Fly. ‘ch the Air,” with the “Virginia "and negro acts, new dances, &c. ~ CHARGE TO THE GRAND JuRny.—Yesterday Morvineg, Judge Fisher, who is holding the March term of the Criminal Court, appropri- ately charged the Grand Jury, and after speak- ing of the high responsibility resting on them, he said he Grand Jury is an institution intended esumed to be a body of prudent, dis- 4@ considerate men cailed together for pose, on the one hand, of protecting the interests of the community and vindietting the offended law, and, on the other hand, of fur- nishing a barrier against private malice and ce. Whilst it w.ll be your duty, there- scertain and present the guilty offen- der. you are no less bound to guard the sacred Portals of your council ch: T against the Wiles sod approaches of malevolence, private reveng nd mere frivolous personal strife, ing the business of your sessions with one bundred and fifty prisoners in your jail. besides other accused persons at large on bai you will have little time to indulge the privat Mummy, Malignity of secret accusers, who, instead of making their complaints before the proper tri- bunal the committing magistrate—where the a y hove the opportunity of hearing the witnesses against him face to face, seek be- Tr body secretly, wantonly, malicious- ly, and not unfrequently falsely, o prefer ac- cusations against better and more worthy peo- ple than themselves, and which ought never to come before a court of justice. «In order to guard against this evil to which I have alluded, itis proper that I should in- struct you that yon should act upon and pre- sent only such offences as are of public noto- riety and within your own knowledge, such as nuisances and the like, or such as may be giver you in charge by the court or by the District Attorney, and no other cases, without a pre- vious examination of the accused before a committing magistrate. In other words, you should rarely, ifever, in your investigations, £0 beyond those cases which may to you from the jail or trom the committing mazistrate throuch recognizances sent by them to the court, or which may be cailed to your notice by the notoriety of the offence, by your own knowledge, or by special instruction from the courtor District Attorney under the order of the court. Ihave seldom known an instance in which the Grand Jury have departed from this view of their duty that has not resulted in 3 waste of their own time, and the sending of @ case to the court and traverse jury of mere private or partisan malice and controversy, which bas occupied more of the time of the court than halt a dozen cases of real public in- terest and importance.” Judge Fisher proceeded to speak of the va- Tious crimes, giving a clear definition of each offence, for the guidance of the jury, and closed by giving directions as to the transaction of siness coming before them, and urging that “in all your deliberations, gentlemen, you Must be mindful that, although you may love mercy, you must in all cases do justice and stand by the maintenance in our midst of peace, good order, and sound public morais.” eae THE BALTIMORE AND WASHINGTON TURN- PIKE.—Atter six years of litigation, the Su- preme Court of the United States, on Monday iast, affirmed the judgment of the Court of Ap- peals of Maryland, which affirmed the judz- ment of the Superior Court of Baltimore city, vacating the pe aia of the Baltimore and Washington Turnpike Company. The road is now free to all travelers, and no power has ex- isted to collect tolls on said road trom Monday, March Sth. This decision is one in which many of our citizens are interested. It is sap- posed that the road bed will be condemned ed the authorities of the counties through whic it passes as a county road, otherwise the legal supposition is that the land has reverted to the original owners, with power at once to enclose it. — Mervicat CowMENCEMENT.—Last evening, the annual commencement of the Medical De- Le of Georgetown College took place at Jdd Fellows’ Hall, which was crowded to overtiowing. The Marine Band was present in full force, and added to the interest of the eceasion. Diplomas entitling the recipients to x M.
