1 LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO. of New Ye Groves’ Streets of —. ‘well received last evening, Prey pested to-night, with ait, Snow emote of oa. music, &c., which made it £0 suc- on its last presentation in this city. Opp Friiows’ Hatt.—Last night of ape entertainment for the benefit of the poor, sisting of a beautiful exhibition of stereoscopic dissolving views, fine vocal and instrumental music, choice poetic readings, &c., &c. Cantersy A @ramatic, gymnastic, Magic. comic, musical and t pro- gramme this evening, with all the Lag of the week in “The Guerrillas of the Po- tomac,” + Haunted House,” &c. ———e- “Brutal TREATMENT oF FREEDMEN.”—A mob of the Copperhead ruffians of George- town. incited by bad whisky and a diabolical spirit of enmity to the negro, last night ecom- bined in an unprovoked and brutal assault on a number of the freecmen of this city, driving them from their homes, sacking their houses, and indulging in various other riotous demon- strations. Firearms were used during the melee, but no casualties have thus far been re- ported. The inference ts natural that to the success of the rebels at the recent municipal election and the President's late speech may be attributed the disgraceful demonstrations on the unoffending blacks which have been made under the shadow ot the Capitol since the veto of the Freedmen’s bill.” The above item, telegraphed trom this city to the New York Tritwne, and copied in other Northern papers, 13.2 fair specimen of the un- just attempts now w making to manufacture pub- lic sentiment in that section to the prejudice of this District, in common with other late slave- holding communities. One report sent out from here was tothe effect that one hundred negroes had been killed in the “melee,” but the author of the above modestly contents himself with «a diabolical spirit of enmity,” “assaults,” “sacking houses,” and other venial offences. There is notone word of truth in the whole article. On the evening in question, the de- fested candidates at the late manicipal elec- tion in Georgetown, were severally called upon at their residences by a small party of their po- litical friends, when salutes were fired, cheers given, &c. Notone negro or white man was molested, nor any disturbance took place. ‘What makes the statement all the more unjust is that the defeated candidates and their sup- porters belong to the “Old Union Line Ticket,” taiming to have represented the especial “loyal” element in that city for the last five years. ~—— CxyTEex MARKET To-Day.—Beef, best cuts, T Ib., 25c.; next, 15a20e.; Salt Beet,15a2ve.; Dried f, juaise.
