EVENING STAR. The Science of Kissing. People will kiss, yet not one in ahundrea knows how to extract bliss from lovely li Bomore than they know how to ‘make dia monds irom charcoal! And yet itis not easy, at least for us! This little item is not alone for new beginners, but for the many who go to it like bunting coons or shelling corn. First know whom you are to kiss. Don’t make a mistake, although a mistake may be good. Don't jump up like atront fora fly, and smack & woman on the neck, on the ear, or on the corner of her forehead, on the end of her nose, or knock off ber waterfall, or jerk her bonnet ribbon, in baste to get through The gentle- man should bea little the tallest. Heshould have aclean face.a kind eye, a month fall of expression, imstead cf tobacco. Don’t kiss everybody; including nasty little dogs, male or female. Don't sit down to it; stand up. Need not be anxious about getting in a crowd. Two persons are enough to corner and catch a kiss: more persons spoil the sport. Stand firm it won't hurt any after you are used toit. Take oe lett band of the t your hat gote—any place out of the way. throw the left hand gently over the shouldot of the lady, and let the hand fall down upon the right side toward the belt. Don't bein a burry; draw her gently, lovingly to your heart: her bead will fall lightly upon your shoul- der—and a handsome shovlder-strap it makes! Dent te in a hurry, send young lady in yeur right; | little life down your left armand let it knew | its business. Her left hand is in your Tight. let there be an expression to that, not like the grip of a vice, the gentle clasp, full of electricity, thoughtand respect. Don’t be in a burry! Her head ties carelessiy on your shoulder! You are nearly heart toheart! Look down into ber half-closed eyes! Gently, vet a press her to your bosom! Stand rr for the ordeal! Be brave, but don’t be in a hurry. Her lips are almost open! Lean light- | T jy forward with your head, notthe body. Take good aim, the lips meet—the eyes close—the Beart opens—the sou! rides the storms, trou- | bie, and sorrows of life, (don’t be in a hurry )— heaven opens before you—the world shoots from under your feet as a meteor flashesacross the evening sky, (don’t be afraid)—the nerves | and Providence witl give you strength | AUCTION SALES. Several years ago there was annual threeday “muster” of certain Western Massachusetts regiments, held at Northampton, in that State. “High Private,” in one of the companies, was the friend 1 wrote of; and jolly good times he and twoor three more choice spirits made for their comrades-in-arms. Now round about the camp various sutlers, showmen, and other outside barbarians had pitched their tents, for the purpose of relieving the militia of their small change. Of 2ourse they succeeded admi- Fably. One evening and scme score of bis friends were outside the lines, having a good time. Roving from point to point they came upon & tent, outside which a burly man Was shouting: “Walk up! Walk! Walk right in and see the great Kentucky giantess, the Borse with six legs, and nary two alike; the living auacondas, and a man that swallows 2sword and eatssmali rocks for supper—all for ten cents!” “By Joye. boys,” said +» “that sounds good! Let's go in.” A smile overspread the feature of the door- k T at the “fat take’ before him. “Many in!” inquired " Lots! Full of soldiers!’ replied the door- keeper. It's worth the money; only ten cents! Pass right in.” “Count “em!” said a “All right,” quoth the guardian of the show. “Pass right in, gentlemen!” And about thirty passed in. “Have you counted em?” inquired ——_. “All right! Thirty-two, an’ you'll make beer ge ape “Oh, I'm not going in!” qnoth * * You ain't?’ said the man,a horrible suspi- cion crossing bis mind. “No; I'm going back to camp,” said . “Good night!” Then, if you could have seen that infuriated Goor-keeper speed to the mysterious interior of the tent! There were at least a hundred persons —- within its canvas walls, allin uni- rm. “Here! Look a-here! 1 counted you 1 be- heve. Didnt I count you! Wasn't you count- ear Tbus he flew from biue-coat to blue; but not a soul owned up, and thirty men saw the snuxkes and things for -nothin’.” It was a bad sell, decidedly. ROMANCE OF THE CoLD SNar.—The Uhicago Tribune tells a story of the recent cold snap that bas a tinge of romance. A pair of youth- ful lovers from Indiana ran away from home during the absence of the girl's father, and ‘went to, Chicago to get married. The father happened to be in Chicago at the time, and got on the track of. the fugitives, they escaping by one door of the Sherman House while he came in at tbe other. The pair got a sleigh and start- ed on the prairie towards Downer’s Grove, where they intended to find shelter and a cler- gyman before the “old man” could reach them. On the way the intense cold froze the pair into pease Gye = They were rescued by the in- mates of 2 house by the wayside, and a doctor summoned. From an expression dropped by the young man whilstin a state of semi-con- sciousness, the rescners concluded the pair were man and wife, and placed them in one bed, the doctor enjoming strict quiet and a to- tal abstinence from conversation. Next morn- tl raged father of the girl tracked the fugitives tothe house, and a “scene” ensued, in whieh rage, horror and confusion were blended. The result was, however, that a clergyman was sent for, and that a marriage took place immediately. Soa ae an wo- man. case was called, a woman peared in court and tooka seat besideher ator. ney. Epler” x had been em, ied, and a plea of “Not Guilty” entered, 8 Wit- ness stand and to give his testi- memoran and hands of his prisoner, to hel) ber, and was therefore able to that was attempted to be played. The woman and ber hondsmen stoutly maintained that she ‘was the person accused of the crime, and the officer Was as positive thatshe was not. Of course the case could not proceed, and Justice ‘was compelled to acknowledge herself defeated.
