Town MerETInG.—Last night, upon the adjournment of the Common Council, a number of citizens assembled in the Coun- cil Chamber, and were called to order by J. ‘Thomas, Esq., President of the Council, who remarked that, having assembled for the pur- pore ef holding & town meeting, it was neces- rary to proceed at once to business; and on his Motion Mayor Addison was called to the chair, ani Themss Jeweil, Exq., was appointed sec- fear i The Président stated the object of the meet- img was preliminary to the devZonstration at Grover’s Theater, in Washington, on Thurs- day next, to endorse the policy of the Presi- dent of the United States. Capt. James Goddard, after a brief explan- atory introdue'ion, offered the following pre- amble and resviutions Whereas the time has arrived in the affairs ef our Government when the line should be drawn between the supporters of the national eoneervatiy ? plicy of Andrew Johnson, Pres- ident of the United States, and of the radical element, who seek to control the legislation of the « y.: Therefore be it , im (own meeting assembled, That we, coservative citizens of Georgetown, riet of Columbia, do most hearuly d will resointely maintain, the res- teration policy of the President of the United States, as enunciated in his Messages to the Congress of the United States, his speeches to pron peorecey and his numerous public and of- cial i dist feed Further, That we view his vetoof the Freedmes's Bureau bill as the crowning act of | his admini. a, eveucing the discernment of the ru man, having at heart the in- terest amd glory of the whole country. Tue Canav.—The business apon the line of the canal is confined altogether to repairing and improving the various works of the coal cempanies and mills, as well as the canal itself. The water has been drawn off, and the mulls ar jent, but laborers are engaged in | removing the mud banks which have accu- mulated at the mills and coal derricks, and in Jeveling the footwalks. The water was drawn off last Saturday, because of a new breach at | the feeder, nearly as bad as the one first re- | paired, aud which bas carried out a part of j the new work. The feeder is about four miles | from Georgetown, and is about half a mile in length, and, unfortunately, is so located that during a freshet it is required to stand tae | foree of the current carrying the floating ice, j and in high water the immense steady pres- suie of the river, and it is not surprising that a | breach should occur there at this season. The | water wiil not be let in again until the first of March, when it will be let in at Cumberland, | to reeume navigation the entire length of the canal. The prospects at Cumberland are in } favor of a very rps Mopar trade during the | approaching season he boatmen are active. | Yy eveaged in preparing for the trade, and quite a number of boats are building. Gkanp Larceny.—Thomas Armstrong, ne- ETO, was arrested yesterday by officer Harry for stealing a beef belonging to Lucas & Cor- coran, of Washington, and taken before Justice Buckey. It appeared that on Saturday night the beef was slaughtered on Mr. Joseph Weav- er’s farm, near the Chain Bridge, and the head | and hide left there. The meat was carried #way and was tracked by the blood to the house of Thomas Armstrong, on the Chain | Bridge rexd. Officer Harry found a part of the | ee ‘ Arm s sat Se house and arrested him, when be confessed participating in the stane™ ter. and told where <ngthor rector the meat | was concealed which was recovered.
