They allege that “the lecture, although osten- sibly to obtain funds for the benefit of colored orphans,” was “in reality to enable certain political parties to promulgate their pecaliar doctrines in opposition to the views of the President of the United Smres and a iarge majority of the American tong war Nothing could have been farther from the design of the ladies than to ask the use of the ehurch for any such purpose, and they feel as if wounded in the house of their friends when professing Christians can so cruelly impugn the motives of a few women, working in 4 despised field for the sake of Him who conde- scended to publicans and sinners: and resort- ing to such honorable mean< as they know bow, to provide food and clothing for the few aged and seventy-two little ones under their care; who bat for the pers.stent effort and kind charitu f some one, would certainly suiler, and probably perish. It never occurred to tuem that the use of the building to secure means to feed the destitute little ones, of whom the Great Head of the church bas said, «Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones,” but “suffer them to come unto me, for of such i the kingdom of heaven,” could “destroy th harmony of the church. and bring it into great disrepute,” or be construed into opposition to the views of a large majority of the American people, or of the Pirsident, who is known to be a friend of the liome and of the colored for the sake of the five hun- ch the lecture has brought the Home, willingly bave wounded a single Chris- tion brother, or offended one of those, however weak, who believe in Christ.
