Se A DssPERATRe AND WHOLESALE ATTEMPT To Break JAt.—One of the Guards Attacked and Kolbed of his Money and Krys—The Attempt Frustrated ty a Deg.—Night betore last a des- perate aitem pt was made by some of the colored prisoners confined iu the county jail to escape, and at is believed that nearly every colored prisoner, and perhaps some of the whites, ‘were concerned in it. Itis well known that the walls of the cells and of the building are easy to penetrate, and it appears that some time after the hours at which the prisoners were locked up on Wednesday, John Butler, a colored burglar, who was arrested a few weeks since by Detectives Bigley and Kelly, charged with six different offences, and who was con- fined in one of the cells in the third story, cut through the wallof the cell and got access to the corridor. Here Butler, the ringleader, was joined by several accomplices. They waited until one of the guard, Mr. Robert Waters, ap- proached on his rounds through the Duildiste, when as soon as he had passed the door ot the corridor, he was garroted by Butler and some of the others, and at the same time his keys taken trom him and his pockets rifled of about 235 in money. The gang then unlocked the re- maining five cells on that floor, releasing the inmates, thereby increasing their number to sbout thirty-five. This formidable party then Proceedied to the next story below, but tortu- nately none of the keys would fit the locks of the cell on that floor. The keys for that floor Mr. Waters had when attacked, slipped down the legs of his trowsers into his boots. Foiled in their efforts to open these doors, the priso- bers commenced a search on the stairs and in ‘be upper story. While this was going on, Mr. Waters’ dog, who usually accompanies the guards on their rounds, finding that his master and himself were outnumbered, set up a bark, and thus no- tified the other guards, who were in the lower stery, and they, with the military guard on duty, hastened up into the building, and after possession of the ys sof the building, as, doubtles made a concerted attempt to pass ont of the building—a thing quite impossible without shed. This is the most desperate attempt whieh has yet been made to escape from this prison, although scarcely a day passes without an attempt to cut through the wall, which will be the case as long as such a rickety old building is used for the confinement of such desperate characters as are now within its walls. We hope tbat Congress will at the preeent session make some provision for a new aud substantial jail. and thus relieye the fears of the community tbat the law-breakers there confined will some day succeed im escaping in & body. en THE AQUEDUCT.—The Georgetown Aqueduct ot the Alexandria Canal, was taken possession of by the military authorities at an early period of the rebellion, for the purpose of ren- dering access easy to the defences in the front. Efforts are now being made by the Canal Com- pany to gain possession of the work, with what success is shown by @ statement of the Alex- andria Gazetfe which says:—We learn that irrefragable arguments have been adduced to the authorities in Washington for the imme- diate and thorough repair of the Aqueduct of Alexandria Canal, but, as yet, without the Prospect of speedy suecess. The ground on which the refusal to “rehabilitate” this, to our city, important work, is that though the queduct is in the District of Columbia, it belongs to a company whose organization is located in one of the former Confederate States. Qa TuE District 1x Concress.—in the Senate, yesterday, on motion of Mr. Wilson, the bill gTanting one million acres of public Jands for common school purposes in the District of Co- iumbis, was taken up. Mr. Sauisbury moved to amend by striking out the words wthont distinction of race or color of the children educated therein. Mr Saulsbury said he wished for a straight record on this question, and calied forthe yeas and mays. Pending discussion, at four o’cloek, the Sen- te adjourned. In the House, the Naval Appropriation being under disenssion, all ot the extra appropria- tions for the Boston and Brooklyn navy-yards ‘were stricken out, after debate under the five minutes’ rule. All of the appropriations for the Washington navy yard were retained. Horse Tu —The horse thieves are growing bold again, and have resumed opera- Uons in this eity and vicinity, running horses off. Several gentlemen have had their saddle horses stolen after having left them a few min- utes, within a week t. And last night the thieves began operations upon the hack teams at various public places. Two hackmen re- ported at the police telegraph station that their teams had been run off within half an hour. ‘One driver was so near his coach that he saw the thief upon the driver's seat, but was unable to reach the coach in time to prevent its disap- pearance around a corner. The other driver Was also Within a few feet of his horses but Supposed they were frightened by some one, and did not think to notice the driver's seat. ——~——_— Tue Batt oy THE ConptucToRs AND Dri- VrR*.—The grand ball given by the 7th street Passenger Kailway Relief Association, com- osed of the conductors and drivers of tnat me, at Odd Fellows’ Hall last night, was. not- withstanding the disagreeable weather, finely attended, and was quite a success.
