The sentinels around the pow magazine at St. Helen's Island are being doubled. Little importance is attached to them. The steamship Palestine, from Liverpool on the 22d, has arrived at Boston. The Emperor Napoleon, in his speech on the 22d ultimo, says that arrangements are being made to withdraw the French troops from Mexico, and it ts hoped that this will pacify the people of the United States, who were invited to join the expedition, but declined, although such expeditions are not opposed to their inerests. The remainder of the speech refers purely to home matters. The canal is to commence at Round Bay, a point some twe! ve miles above Annapolis, on the Severn river, and will run a distance of twenty miles oyer an almost perfectly level country, to the head- waters of the eastern branch of the Potomac at Bladensburg. It is designed for the accommo- dation of the Cumberland coal trade, reaching the District of Columbia by the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, which may thence be brought, Without transhipment. across to Annapolis. BaseMexyt Briard Tape —We have been shown lately, by Mr. Bradley, of Wash- ington, a medium-sized basement billiard-table, ot a most ingenious character, for family amusement. The table, which is eight feet by four, is stationary in tbe basement or dining hall, and is regularly used as a dining-table, by means of moveable slabs as a cover. When the dinner is over, these slabs are removed, the beautiful green bed and cushions of a minis table are revealed and by means of screws in the iegs and water-leyels on each side, the table is graduated for an evening's play. It has four pockets, and is proposed to play upon it with three 2 1-> balls. The area of the table, it will be seen, is sufficiently large to demon. straie ali the peenliar forces, curves and in- clinations to which the ivory mediums aresub- ject, and would afford amusement and relaxa- Uon a! times, even tolan artist. The object of this billiard-tabie, however, is to supply families who haye a limited space, with the delightful amusement of billiards at a reason- able price, and at the same time extend the knowledge of the game among ladies and the young.— Wilkes” Spirit of the Times RATE OF INTEREST IN PENNSYLVANIA.— The Board of Trade of Philadelphia have me- morialized the Legislature of Pennsylania to fix the legal rate of interest at seven per cent This amount, they contend, willnot buy a much of the necessaries of life as sif or even five per cent. a few years ago, because banks And capitalists find more profit in holding United States and other loans than in lending money for business purposes, which is limited by law to six per cent., to the great disadvan. age of manufactures and commerc?. GEORGIA UNITED STATES SEN ATORS.—The report that the Legislature of Georgian had elected both the Hon. A. H. Stephens and the Hon. H. V. Johnson to the U.S. Senate, 1s con- lirmed. It seems that a committee of members ofthe Legislature addressed Mr. Stephens a note, asking him categorcally if he would serve as United States Senator if elected. In bis reply, Mr. Stephens used the following language: “1 cannot imagine any possible case in which I would refuse to serve, to the best of my ability, the people of Georgia in any posi- tien they might assign to me, whether assigned with or without my consent.” Hanpsone REVENUE ReceirTs.—There was 2 handsome increase in the receipts of internal revenue during the week just closed—the total footing not far from $9,000,000. Compared with the previous week, there is again of about $4,000,000, One reason for the increase is said to be because of the suppression of many fran. dulent practices at the South, whereby the revenne on large quanuties of the producis of that region found its way into the private pockets of officials instead of the vaults of the Treasury. SF The Mississippean states that W. M. Pickett’s fine plantation on Big Black river, 2,440 acres, fine steam gin, bogs. cattle, corn, ete., has been sold for $20,000 in gold.
