Mr. Northrop responded, expressing, on be- half of the convention, their high appreciation of the kind attentions of their friends of the District of Columbia An inyitation was then extended to all the friends of education present to participate in the proceedings. The Chair aiso embraced the opportunity of announcing the presence of the Minister of the Argentine Republic—a friend of popular edu- cation. The Minister was then escorted to the latform, and proceeded to explain the state of Fis country, the views of his countrymen on education, &c. The secretary then read the proceedings of the informal meeting at Hartisburg. Before conclud- ang, he introduced tae following resolutions: Resolved, That the importance of the educa- tional interests of the country demands that there be prepared accurate statistical tables, embracing a clear, comprehensive statement ot the whole educational machinery of the na- tion. Resolved, That until there is greater uniform- ity in regard to the items to be embraced in ed- ucational reports, and the manner of collecting the facts, and the basis unpou which the esti- mates are made, such tables cannot be pre- pared. Resolved, That to secure this uniformity there should be connected with the Department of the Interior an educational bureau, whose duty it shall be to prepare blank forms for the annual State reports to be made te the superintendent of such bureau, with proper and suitable instructions to receive said an- nual reports from the superintendents of pub- lic instruction of the several States, and form stal al tables, which shall embody so much of said rts as he shall deem advisable to Ppreeert to the public. The resolutions were unanimonely adopted. After brief consultation it was agreed that the convention should meet at the same place this morning at niue o'clock, when the secre. tary would read his paper -‘on the practicabili- ty of greater uniformity in the school system of the United States,” which would, doubtless, invite “interesting discussion.” This Wednesday evening a public meeting Will be held in E-street Baptist Church, Key. Dr. Gray, paster, when the subject of the new @ducational bureau will be considered, with other business of general interest, ‘The meeting then adjourned. ee DIsEASE AMONG UATTLE.—This winter quite number of cattle on the outekirts of the city and the surrounding country, in Prince Georges and Montgomery counties, have died quite suddenly, giving rise to the fear that the disease which carried them off was epidemical, and also that the disease might be the Rinder- pest, which bas prevailed among cattle so fa- ially in Europe. e learn that the Veterinary Surgeons, who have been called on to treat the diseased cattle in this vicinity, bave found that most of the illnes+ results from a disease of the Jangs con- tracted by the animals from the severe winter, and this Gisease being a difficult one to cure when the animal is not in prime order, quite a pumber of animals bave been lost. Besides this disease there are other affections, originat- * ing from the want of proper care, (shelter as ‘well as food.) some of which have proved fa- tal this season, and in one or two instances some ef the dairymen have jost very heavily. Was entered and the prisoner disch: 4 Lioyd Smiler and John Smiler, larceny of & watch valued at $75, the property of John xton, were put on trial. The evidence showed that on Iast Christmas day the prisoners (with another not arrested) went to tke house of Braxton, in the Seventh Ward. Lloyd Smiler got his foot mside the door and called Braxton a son of a b—h, and told him to come down. ‘ton came down and struck at Lloyd Smiler witha stick. Lioyd backed out. Braxton shat thedoor. The party Outside pushed the door — and dragged Braxton ont, and beat him. in the fight Brax- ton’s watch fel’ outof his pocket. One of the party exclaimed, Take the son of a b—h's watch.” Lloyd Smiler seized the watch and ran off. A witness testified that the man nt arrested was the one who called Lloyd Smiler’s atten- tion to the watch. Mr. Philips, counsel for Jehn Smiler, asked the Court to instruct the jury to render a ver- dict of acquittal in the case of John Smiler, as there is no evidence against him on the charge ot larceny. The Judge instructed the jury as prayed by the counsel, and Joba Smiler was acquitted, and used as a witness for Liloyd Smiler. Ver- dict of the jury, guilty as indicted. Phillips and J. C. Carlile for defense. pliner StraLtyc Woop.—The wood merchants near the canal are badly used by the negroes quar- tered in that vicinity, who are principally ““contrabands,” but very few of them being residents of this city previous to the rebellion. The negroes of that vicinity pay little for their fuel, it being turnished “involuntarily” by the merchants, one of wnom, Mr. J. B. Warder, testified befere Justice Morsell that he be- lieved the wood stolen from his yard during the winter was worth over $2. He had caught eight or nine in his yard, but did not prosecnte them. Last night he caught another negro named Jessie Lewis in his yard. Lewis had climbed a fence nine feet high in order to get in, but had taken nothing when he was caught. Justice Morsell fined him $2 under the Corporation law.
