Tse River axp Canal.—The mereantile houses on the water side are doing but little comparatively this time, and it coald not be otberwiee, since the routes of communication with their patrons except by railroad have closed so long. The river channels are now epen, and vessels may arrive and depart with- out serions difficnity. thongh the shallows are covered with ice. The canal is not yet opened, and the large mills have not commenced ope- rations, the water pot being sufficient. The work of repairing the break at the feeder is progressing as rapidly as possible, and hopes are = that the waver will be let in upon this division after another week. The reopening of the canal will be a welcome event to OUT Citizens, as by it they expect the arrival of much stock that bas been stored at country depote as well as cause the employment of many hands who have been idle for several weeks. Grand LaRceny—On Wednesday. officer Cameron arrested Elizabeth Sewell, colored, for the larceny of $5, the property of Got- leib Hurlebaus. The complainant had several times missed money aad other goods, and suspected a boy in hisemploy. And op one Occasion, foon after missing some meney, searched the boy, and failed to find it. He then suspected the prisoner, a servant in the house, and told bis Bboy to go out of the house. He laid his pocket-book curetessly on 2 table and secreted himself in a wardrobe to watch it, The prisoner entered the room, and complainant's wife went out as if to get something im another Toom. The prisoner immediately took the pocket-book, and taking a five dollar note. put it in her bosom, and put the pock-hook back. Complainant stepped out of the wardrobe and arked her ter the money, she denied that she bad it, but finding that she was caught, gave up the stolen five dollar note. She was taken before Justice Buckey, whoheld her to bail for court @7 Dr. Pallon, of St. Foy, France, an- nounces a new method of curing @ cold in the bead.
