The case was assigned to Mr. Barry, then a de- tective, who went to work to trace the watch and capture the thief. He arrested a colored man named Francis Johnson, but was unable te fasten the larceny upon him and the case was dismissed. The property was given up for lost until last Wednesday, when Detectives Clarvoe and Mc- Devitt, who remembered the description, while examining some watches found one that an- Swered the description. They took possession of it and arrested 2 negro named Chas. H. Ty- Jer, who claimed itas his property. Mr. Ze- ‘Bender was «ent for to identify bis watch, and bly surprised at seeing itagain. There is but little doubt but of this number, which is believed to be the largest nomber ever recorded in a like period pre- viously; fully three-fourths were transfers of jots, which were to be put to immediate use for building purpores. The practice of not having deeds and other valuable papers recorded as soon after their execution as practicabie, is to be deprecated, as titles are always un- certain until the deeds are recorded. It be- hooves all having deeds unrecorded,to put them on record at once, and thus secure themselves against frauds. —— Hetp To Bar. yor CoveT—On Wednes- day Martin Waish and Joseph Engelman, who were arrested in Alexandria, Va., about a week ago for picking the pocket of Mrs. Malinda Bendedict, in 4 street car in this city, and were turned over to Detectives Kelly and Bigley, had 3 hearing before Superintendent Richards, aad ‘were ordered to give bail forcourt. Walsh etcceeded im giving bail, and Engelman is re- tained at the police headquarters, awaiting the arrival of a friend to become his bondsman. ‘The amount stolen was $159.
