EVENING STAR. The Proposed Union of Churches, The overtures for & union between the An- lican and Greek Churches, and between these id the Church of Rome, tnouga earnestly seed by the high church of Anglican iblishment, are, as might be expected, meet- ing with present Opposition from the evangeli- eal party and their outside allies, the dissent- ers. The question i# no longer restricted to re- ligious controversialists, but is come to be handled with great freedom by the secular press. The Manchester Guardian of the 10th, we _— 4s out im an editorial leader in op- ition. The editor warns Dr. Pusey and his aioe friends “they may go too far,” and stir up even within the bosom of the Establish- ment another reformation before they are aware of. The Guardian asks: “an Dr. Pusey beso sanguine as to ima- gine that in the ctofa union with the Anglican Cuareh iB Pope would surrender the spiritual authority which he actuaily ex- erciees over the Roman communion in this country, or does he flatter himself that Pariia- ment will abolish the coronation oath and the oath of supremacy? For one of these alterna- tives is an bo a emg preliminary to a union of the churches. Either the English Ro- manisis, with the sanctionof the Pope, must come within the pale of the English Establish. ment, then recognized by the Pontiff as a sister Church, or the Anglican Church, released by act of Parliament from the royal supremacy, Must pass under submission to the see of Rome. Can Dr. Pusey really think for a moment that either“of these alternatives is within the bounds Of possibility?’ By a process of casuistry, some People may, we suppose, succeed in convin- cing themselves that there is no absolutely ir- reconeslable divergence between the canons of Trent and the Thirty-ninth Articles. With bat part of the contro versy we have nothing odo. Buthow do the Unionists propose to get over our acts of Parliamept? The Sover- eign of England swears to maintain the Pro- testant reformed religion as established by law, andevery clergyman ot the Charch ac- knowledges the supremacy On oath and re- bounces the spiritual authority of any foreign potentate whatever.” Per contra, the New York Chureh Joarnal— as if speaking for the High Church branch of the Episcopalians in the United States—is ear- nestly advocating measures looking to union, especially with the Greek OCommuzion. The editor says: “So far as terms of Communion are con- cerned, we have nothing to demand of the Oriental churehes in the way of concession on their part. The only question is asto what they shall demand of us on their part. And in thts yiew, the Rey. Dr. Craik, the President of our House of Clerical and Lay Deputies in General Convention, in a book just ed by him, “The Divine Life an¢. the New Birth,” entirely coincides with the addition that we ought to give up the Filioque if that shall be fonna the sole obstacle in the way of intercom- maunion.” Meanwhile, the Episcopal Recorder of Phila- delpbia—an organ of the low Churchmen—fires & shot at what it calls the Romanizing tenden- cies of a certain community of clerical gentle. men who have just published a volame of de- votions called “The k of hours.” it contains “offices for the seyen canonical bours, litanies and other devotions." The Recorder asks : “Have we then a community of monks of our communion! If we have, where is it! Do apy of our Bishops know of its existence and sanction it? * We regard the publication asa Jesuit seein, to put mto the bands of our Romanizing ritnalists, a formula of devotion whieh ehall foster and feed the taste for Lit- urgies and Litanies which are the productions ofa secondary inspiration, and which cannot be eatiefied with our confessedly uninspired Book of Common Prayer.” B7 The Buffalo Commercial Advertiser has &n account of the great ice jam below Niagara Falls.
