Monday afternoon the case was reported to the police atalate hour, and Assistant Superintendent Reed, and Acting Detective Johnson and Offi- cer Miller :mmediately went te work, and be- fore noon yesterday arrested W. P. sire H. Shreves, Charles Maguire, Harr: solline, aud James Pike, and last evening ee had a hearing before Superintendent Richards. It appeared in evidence that on the evening of }riday Shreves went to the house of Mr. Ha- g8n and inquired of Mrs. Hagan if her husband would attend market nextday. She told him that Mr. H. would be at market very early in the morning. Shreves mounted his horse and rode off. Saturday morning, immediately after Mr. Hagan had left for market, a carriage drove up in the road near the house, and the prisoners got ont and went to the house and asked Robert Eaglan,a col- ored seryant, togive them some rope and a Jight, as their carriage was broke down, and ‘ked for an axe. The colored man started * barn followed by two of the party to get the articles, and on the way they knocked bim down and returned to the house and entered. Pike seized Mrs. Hagan by the throat and threw heron the floor, and told herif she made a noise he would kill her and the negro too. M: H got free and by her screams aroused agentle- moan mm the house, in the upper story. As the otleman began to approach Mrs. Hagan Hloed to bim to get &® gun and shoot the par- and made for a gun herself to shoot Pike. The ruffians hearing the gentleman called, pare their search for money and valuables, » which they were engaged, and escaped to ibeir carriage. The parties were fully identi- fied, and all were sent to jail for assault and bat Ty with intent to kill Mrs. Hagan and the vant, and attempt to rob the house, except reves, Who gave bai! in $3 to appear at court. The officers deserve credit for their success, after the notice having been so long delayed.
