Bray, of the Third Ward, and F. Rupp, a special officer, doing daty on 7th street, north of G, noticed a wagon driven suspiciously upon their beat, and after Watching it for s time, stopped it, and in- uired of the driver what he had in the wagon. he reply was, “nothing.” They were not gatiefied, and looking in the wagon, found it contained the dead body ofa necro. The priso- ners proved to be a city physician and a colored man named Charles Stokes, At the hour for trial the case was laid before Justice Thompson. and the facts testified to by the Officers. When they renched Seventh street Gates struck the officer knecking him down, when he also dell, but was about to break away.
