LOCAL NEWS — 'e THE PARDON BROKERAGE CASE. Trial of General L.€. Baker. Oxmivat Covert, Junes Pieter Yesterday, after our report closed, the cross~ examination of Alfred Spier was continued, and when the witness was about leaving the stand Mr. ewe & asked Kim if he had not been indicted for the same offense, and he said that he had been informed that indictments had been found against him, bat he never had been arrested, nor had he given bail. After some sharp questioning by Mr. Bradley, however; and the production of the records Of the court, it was shown that he had joined with Mf Stanton in pail for his apparrance. Jecob Smith was sworn, and testified that in November Inst he was ® clerk for General Baker. l remember a ‘of the transac. tions when Mr. and Mre. Cobb were brought there. On the evening m question, after ad from supper about six o'deek Lsaw Mr. Oo! in tbe room down stairs. 1 General Baker's bell ring, and went up stairs to his Private office, and General Baker requested me to take a seat. Mrs. Oobb was there. I took 8 seat, and General Baker went and 1 re- mained in the office twe or three hours, and unt! Baker returned. Baker simply told me to take @ seat, and I did so. I fonnd a man named Collins in the lower room with Mr. Gobb, but we had no guards or sentinels ‘@t the headquarters, While I was in the lower room Cobb "was part of the time sitting on a lounge, and part of the time walking about. He was not re. strained of his liberty. I answered General Baker's bell about 7 o'clock, and he simply asked me to take aseat. He did not say where he was going when he went out. He was ab- sent possibly three hours. When he retarned he ¢ame into the room and said he had been to the Executive Mansion. I can’t recotiect all of the conversation that transpired between Gen. Baker and Mrs.Cobb. The substance of it was that he had been to the President about the pardon business, and that the President was much surprised. and said it was time it was broken up. Mrs. Cobb seemed to be inti- mate with Gen. Baker. She was up stairs an hour after Baker's return before she came down. I went to the doorand paid the hack bill. Mr. Cobb refnsed to enter the hack with hie wife, alleging that she was too polite to Baker. She made no complaint of coercion. She did not complain of ill-treatment, nor did I hear Mr Cobb say anything. There was no one about the room when Mrs. Cobb and I were there. I remember it distinetly, because she wanted a drink of water, and I was desi- Tous of getting it for her, but could see no one about. I can’t say for what purpose 1 was taken up to the room, but as it was a private apartment, and there were a great number of od, Gehry megs there, 1 was asked to take a seat until Gen. Baker returned. Cross-examined by Mr. Bradley.—1 do not think I was placed there to guard Mrs. Cobb. I do not suppose I should have stopped her if she had attempted to go out. I did not under- stand that I was to detain her, and if she had felt inclined to go I should not have felt dis- posed to keep her, as I had no orders or au- thority to do eo. By Mr. Stapton.—I had thing but take a seat. By Mr. Bradley.—1 never told any one who was brought to the office that they could not go justyet. I may have done so, but I do not re- member. We did not keep prisoners there. There was another room, and it was not my duty to hold them in eustody. By Mr. Riddle—When we had occasion to have guards at headquarters General Baker was a with them. By Mr. Bradley.—I have sometimes known the detectives to be called upon to take charge of a room, but we did not keep prisoners at headquarters. ; Court adjourned until ten o'clock this morn - ng. ——e Government of the District of Columbia.
