—~ — LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Grovenr’s TaxatsR.—Last nigut positively of “Lite Barefoot.” To-morrow evening is Maggie Mitchell's benefit, when a new bili of unusual interest will be announced. Satur- ‘ night, Maggie Mitchell's last performance Seaton Hatyt.—The Hutchinson Family in ©*An excellent programme of vocal and instru- mental) music. Goyzaca Hatt.—Lecture by Archbishop Spalding on * The Crescent and the Cross. Proceeds to be devoted to the improvement and education of poor boys. CansTExRURY.—The regular company in the usual bill. —e THe WORKINGMEN’S ConvENTION.—An ad- journed mevtung of the Workingmen’s Conven- on was held last evening in the Council «chamber, (City Hail,) but m consequence of the inclement state of the weather there was not 8 large attendance. _ Mr. Darius Daughton presided, and Mr. J. F. Mattingly Secretary. Mr. Koi F. Muir, adetegate from the Plas- terers’ Association, was admitted. The Chair stated the object of the meeting to be the selection of two delegates to represent ‘the Mpg senor in the National Convention. be following were nominafed :—Richard — Donaid McUathran, J.C.C. Whaley, Hough S| mons wes elected on the firet ballot, Te heing a tie between Messrs. McCath- i Whaley a second ballot was had, pen im the choice of Mr. Whaley. T. Mc(Cathran, from the executive com- ge@Mittes, reported that all the memorials out for fignatures had not been returned, and it was desired that they be sent by noon on Saturday next, to secretary of the committee, Mr. Theodore Sniffin, 1ith street east and G street south, and the committee would meet on Sat- urday evening at the Germania Hall. It was desirabie that the memorial be shortly pre- sented. Mr. Waltemyer called the attention of the Convention to the fact that some of the em- loyees of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad at frokne Clare had struck because they were refused the same allowance as is given for extra and Sunday work by private shops. They had waited on Mr. Garrett. the president of the road, who stated that trade organizations were detrimental to the interests of companies, and either one or the other would have to come under. These men demanded double time for Sunday work and time and a half for night “work, as allowed in private shops, and refusing to work for less, some were discharged and others ip the same shop struck. He regarded the action of the men justifiable, and said they should be sustained. He understood that some of the trades’ organizations bad taken the mat- terin hand. Nome of the men on the Northern Central road had been discharged for the same reason. Mr. Mattngly stated that the Bookbinders’ Association to which he was attached, had made an appropriation to aid the Baltimo- reans. Mr. McLean said that the convention should Tecommend the subject to the various trade organizations. It struck him that Mr. Garrett Was right in his answer, for monopolies cannot live if the workingmen stood up for their rights, but it too often happens that they are not true to their interests, as is shown by the men of one branch only at Mount Clare stopping work. What they asked was little enough, and double pay would not pay for Sunday work, for no man should require his fellow man to break the Sabbath. Every moral man in the community would endorse them if they Tefused to work for any price on Sunday. The money of the convention was for other pur- poses, but moral support could be given them. Mr. Waltemyer offered a resolution sympa- thising with the men from Mount Clare now on astrike for their rights, and recommending that the various trade organizations here sus- tain them by giving them pecumiary aid. The resolution was adopted, and the conyven- tion adjourned. —— aot Sotprens’ AND SalLons’ CONVENTION.—The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ National Conveation esterday occupied the day at the League Seams in completing their organization, and last evening assembled in the hall of the House of Representatives to hear an address by Gen. Banks The speaker commenced by showing the ad- Vantages of a military education, and the im- rtance of such an institution as West Point. e did rot hold that the rebel States have been destroyed, and he did not wish to see estab- lished a system of territorial governments therein, requiring the maintenance of a stand- ing army, with ail its dangers to the — and form of republican institutions. He held that there isa safe way in which the administra- tion of government in these States can be set- tled witbout reducing them to Territor.es; but it must be done by placing the power in the hands of their loyal population, and exclude from any share therein the senting traitors. Whether we should do this to the fall extent ef the requirements of vengeance he would not say, but tolet them go at large, unpunished and restored to wer. would be as base as would have been «surrender to their armies in the field. Senator Wilson followed Gen. Banks in a speech against entrusting the leading rebels With political privileges, and at the conclusion of his remarks, the convention adjourned sine die. —— Potrce ReEpouts. urth = Precinct.—John Covnor and Louis Brown, vagrants: work- house.
