Better — Yeoterday John 0. Butler had a hearing before Superintendent Kichards in the following cases The house of J. M. Duncanson was robbed of & gold watch, about 50 volumes of books and uumerous house furnishing articles. The house was entered by forcing open the kitchen am . Window, and after ransacking the house the burglars returned to the kitchen and feasted wpon oysters Mr. Duncanson had there. The Justice committed Butler to jail in default of bail. And also in the following cases : The house of Solicitor Edward Jordan, of ee the Treasury, was robbed on the evening of mber 2th of meats, liquors, plated ware. Silver ware, &c., valued at over $100. The house @atered by forcing the back cellar win- d the thieves broke a lock in making their Way up «airs. Mr. Jordan identified Part of the goods recovered as his. Mrs. Archibald McNeil identified a shawl and piano cover recovered since the goods be- fore described in the S_ar belonging to her were Tecovered Mr. R. H Hall, a boarder at Col. William B. Randolph's, 24 G street north, testified that Within six weeks the house was entered by burglars, and a military cape belonging to him ‘was stolen. He identified the cape. Several other persons boarding at the house lost val- wBahl+ arucles of clothing. Gea. A. B. Dyer testified that his house was entered between midnight and daylight of Oc- tober 15, 1565. He lost asuit of clothes he had ©n the day before. identified a handkerchief ©f peculiar patter that was in the pocket of his coat, and a pair of pants. The house had been entered and robbed on two former occa- sions. The house is occupied by military gen- tlemen, and on those occasions they lost cloth- ing valued at over $200, none of which have yet been recovered Mr. J. O. Green identified a set of furs stolen jgrom a room in the United States Treasury be- longing to him. Other articles were taken at the same time, all valued at $200. They were recovered at a pawn offi In each of these cases detectives Clarvoe and Mc Devitt testified to the recovery of the goods { various places where they had been de] by the prisoner, thus connecting him with each burglary. ee ee Tue Levy Covrt.—The following are the general features of the bill introduced by Sena- tor Morrill yesterday to enlarge the powers of the Levy Court of the county of Washington: Section first provides, in addition to the ex- isting remedy by distress for recovery of taxes, th: y may be sold to satisfy such taxes, or any portion becessary, not less than one acre, where the amount taxed exceeds that quantity, afier advertising, bya definite des- om, With mame of owner and amount Bseessed, in a newspaper in Washington, for eight weeks the purchaser to pay taxes and ex- penses, @d within eight days after two years from the day of sale the residue of the purchase Money to the collector of thé Levy Court, pro- vided that the proprietor may within two years regain his title by payment of taxes, Bnd taxes and ten per cent. interest thereon; And provided, also, that such sales for taxes shall be made, if there shall be personal prop- erty of sufficient value to pay said taxes, and Bot then until the collector shall file a sworn Yeturn that there is no such personal property; ‘nd that minors or mortgages shall be allows one year after coming of age, or obtaming pos- session, or a decree for sale to redeem such property Section second empowers the collector, for ‘want of bitters or other sufficient cause, to postpone th le to another day, giving public Botice of postponement. Section third authorizes the collector to col- lect taxes by distress and sale of goods and chattels, by giving ten days’ notice in a Wash- ington newspaper. It also gives authority to the Levy Court to appointa coroner for the county outside of the District, with power to Tegulate the tees of coroners, officers and wit- nesses on inguests, and gives similar power to the cities of we ashington aud Georgetown, re- spectively. The fourth section empowers the court to pase Iaws prohibiting and punishing profane Swearing and indecent exposure of one’s per- son. So_preRS ANDSAILoRs NATIONAL Conven- ‘Tlos.—The Convention of delegates from the Union Leagues of the several States, met in Union League Hall, 9th street, at 12 m., yes- terday. Mr. L. E. Dudley was elected tempo- rary chairman, and read an address stating the manner in which the League of this city had been organized. The following officers of the convention ‘were elected:—President, Major General John A. Logan; First Vice President, General A. CO. Parry; Second Vice President, General E. W. Hinks; Secretaries, Major J. E. Doughty and Captain James Cross; Treasurer, Colonel Charles Houghbtling: Sergeant-at-arms, John M. Powers. Captain H. A. Hall proposed Colonel L.C. Houk, Colonel J. B. Brownlow, Colonel W.P. Stokes, and Lientenant J. D. Lewis to repre- sent the State of Tennessee in the convention, and other gentlemen nominated others frem other States, all of whom were admitted. On motion of Captain m,of New Hamp- shire, it was decided thba®the votes in the con- ‘vention should be limited to the number of epresentatives in the two Houses of Congress, and that the District of Columbia be entitled to ree votes. oe Cepain H. A. Hall, of the District of Colam- dia, offered a resolation providing for a com- mittee of five to repert to the convention a plan for providing homes for disabled soldiers and sailors. Carried. ‘Also, that all questions arising before the con vention, which require the action of Con- gress, may be referred to a committee of five to be appointed by the chair. Adopted.
