Sai ikea Saninae A Goop SceGEstion.—Mr. Editor: It has of- ten been a subject of wonder to myself and others that is the District, especially now that all kinds of paper stock is so high, that the poorer classes do not turn their attention to- wards gathering the unlimited supply of such material out of the streets. The streets of ‘Washington and Georgetown would be a per- fect Ei Dorado to a New York or Parisian chiffonier. Very few of our housewives save their rags, and eyen some of the servants are above what was considered a praiseworthy practice in our young days. A praiseworthy es not for the sake of a few pence, but to inculcate lessons of economy instead of need- lees waste. Let a few of our needy “colored brethren” arm themselves with bag and hook and gather a good harvest of rags, paper, glass and old metals before the street scavenger con- veys itto parts unknown. It will be much more honorable for them than asking for chari- ty, and will pay better in the end. Yours, Economy. EXTERTAINMENT.—Last evening, the mem- bers of Capitol Circle, Brotherhood of the Union, with a number of invited guests, par- took of an oyster supper at Kioman’s, on 7th street, where an hour or two was pleasantl spent, and full justice done to the stewed, broiled, fried, &c., even the famous oyster eater of the Sixth Ward, Tobe, being fully satisfied. During the evening Mr. Richard Emmons made a few remarks as to the estab- lishment of the order, stating that it was founded by George Lippard, of Philadel- phia, and had for its object the advancement of the interests of the workingman. He also zpoke of the difficulties encountered when it ‘was first established and its present prospects, ‘The committee having charge of the entertain. ment consisted of Messrs. Adams, Larman and Thompson We understand thata circle will be formed in the First Ward in a day or two.
