EVENING STAR. | Financial ercial. \ The New York stock market yesterday took | ‘SRother spasmodic turn upward. The outside Public stad aloof from speculation, and the brokers operating fora rise have to carry the | ‘whole burtben of the market. Governments are quiet, buton the whole firm. Gold inter- est bonds are supported by 4D expectation of higher quotations from London by the next Steamer, it being presumed that the com; tively low rate of interest at Paris will afford early relief to the Bank of England. In the January number of the Atlantic Monthiy is a poem which is called “ Wind the Clock !” and which has been extensively copied in the country papers. We have been ex- tremely puzzled ever since first reading this mysterious affair, to know whet it was all about, and we find that the editor of the Bos- ton Advertiser is equally nonplussed, although we had been of the opinion that nothing com- sng a Boston could be dark to a Bostonian mind. Is the poem a riddle? asks the Advertiser— and does the Atlantic intend to furnish an an- Swer in the next number? We take pride in Saying that we have guessed all the riddles and rebusses in “(ur Young Folks.” We are good at guessing. But “ Wind the Clock” is teo much for us. Let us point out some of the difficulties. Take the first stanza for instance Warden, wind the clock again; Mighty years are going on, Through the shadow and the dream And the happy-hearted dawn. Wind again, wind again, Fifty hundred years are gone. Whois the “Warden!” Warden of What? Of the universe? Of the State Prison! Of a Junatic asylum? Of what? ‘Why is he to wind the clock? «Mighty years are “going on;” yes, but what sense is there in saying that they are going “through the shadow and the dream and the happy hearted dawn?’ What is a “happy hearted gawnt” “Fifty hundred years are gone.” Yes, and more too, perhaps; but why does the writer pitch upon this particular num- ber! And what bas it all todo with winding the clock? But im the third stanza the riddle comes in again: Pour-and-twenty conjurers Lie in wait on land and sea, Plucking down the startlea ship, Boud-embroidering the tree. ‘Wind again, wind again,— ‘We have neither ship nor tree. What is meant by the “conjurers"? Why “four-and-twenty” Whatisa “startled ship t What is meant by “plucking down” a ship! Is it the business of conjurors to pluck down ships! or to “bud embroider” (!) trees? Who are “we” who “have neithership nor tree,"and wh should -we call upon a “Warden” to “wind again” on that acceunt! The riddle goes on: Four-and-twenty kings to come Up the never-vacant stair,— Four-and-twenty dead go down, Follow, sacred song and prayer, ‘Wind again, wind again,— Warden, why delaying there? Here is the mysterio “four-and-twenty” again. Whatare those “kings” going up and stairs? Whatare the stairs? What does all this mean? We can make nothing of it, nor of the following stanzas— ry To bis interrupted dream Comes the long-entreated day. ‘What are lesser words to him ? Sweet pursuing voices say,— “ Warden, wind, wind again, Up the ever-golden way.” Other bands will wind the clock While the trequent years go on, Never noting need or name Nor the rapture of the dawn. Wind again, wind again, Ere the given year be gone. ‘Will somebody be kind enough to state, in plain, transparent English, the meaning of this S= if there is any meaning to it! conrse it mast have some profound meaning, or it ‘Wouldn’t have appeared in the Atlantic Monthly. There must be some great merit in it if one were only smart enough to find it out. But we don't see it. To us, in our orance, a ae m gold just,) this remarkable production seems to be ‘nefther good sense nor good nonsense, neitner Yhyme nor reason, neither poetry nor prose, Data kind of literary “« What is it,” got up to mystify the public. ; ———SSEeeeee S27 The Iron Moulders’ Convention, whi ch Bas been in sessionin New York the past week, bas adjourned sine die.
