Hi. B. Latrobe, Esq., President, presidea, and Mr. Wm. Clopping Corresponding Seereta- Ty of the Society, acted as Secretary to the Board. Delegates were preseat from many of the States, among others Hon. Mr. Gregory, of N. Y., and President McLain of Princeton, N. J. Hon. Abraham Hanson, the Consul General to Liberia, was also present, and in conversa- tion with the directors gave many interesting facts as to the growth of the “Young African Republic.” The meeting of the directors was rather an informal one to talk over the pros- pects of the Society, and the reports of the of- ficers, Kc. Two papers written by colored men of Bar- badoes, in relation to the expedition were read, and the able manner excited remark, aad some seemed to doubt that they were written by col- cored men, but one of the directors, conversant with the people of Burbadoes, vouched that no one but colored men wrote the reports. The forty-ninth annual meeting of ue sosiety was held last evening at 44-street Presbyte- rian Church, which was not so well attended 4s some of the former meetings. President La- trobe took the chair, and introduced Rev. S. A. Clark, of New Jersey, who opened with a very appropriate prayer. Wm. Coppinger, Esq. the corresponding Secretary of the society, read the report for the past year. The report opens by acknowledging with gratitude the blessings of Providence on the society, and pays a tribute to the memory of David Hunt, James Raily, Dani Tarabull, Esqs.. and Hon. Thos. Corwin, officers of the society, and Mrs. L. H. Sigourney, Dr. 0. A. Smith, H. Huntington, Gerard Hallock, and the late President Lincoln. A handsome tri- bute is also paid to the memory of the late Stepben A. Benson, President of Liberia. As tw the financial condition of the society, it is stated that the balance in the treasury st the cemmencement of the year was $1,523.33. The receipts haye been—from donations, $5,5°3.27, and from special donations for the Barbadoes expedition, $1,504.76, from legacies, $5,737.08; from the Government of the United States, b ing final payments for the support of the re- captured Africans landed in Liberia in 1560 and 1561, $6,972.50; trom invested funds, r ized to meet expenses of emigrants, and from other sources, $13, total amount, during the ye: The disbursements for the same period were $41,597.47, of which $9,259.59 was for passage and the usual support, &c., of American emi- nd $19,367.95 was for the Barbadoes ring the cash on band, January HM. Of this Intter $4,565.35 is on, 08 1, 1866, Awaiting the order of the Liberian authorities, and the balance, $1 society. The number of emigrants to Liberia during the past twelve months was 527, exceeding the emigration of any year since 1556. At the last annual meeting of the Board ten thousand doilars were appropriated tor the purpose of aiding emigration from Barbadoes to Liberia. The zealous financial secretary of the society, the Rev. Wm. McLain, D. D., em- barked at Philadelphia, February 24, and arrived at Bridgetown, the port of entry of that island, en the lith of March, after a pleasant voyage of fifteen days. He was received with indications of regard and gratitude, and suc- ceeded in every respect much beyond what Was anticipated. Large numbers were found to be anxious to remove to the African Repub- lic; and on the 6th of April the Cora set sail With 346 passengers, liberally furnished for a passage of sixty days. Provisions for their support for at least the same period after land- ing were also sent at the same time. The passage to Monrovia was a pleasant one, and Made in thirty-three days, without serious sickness or a single death. Among these people ‘were coopers, carpenters, shoemakers, and teachers, with several who thoroughly under- Stand the cultivation of the cane and the man- ufacture of sugar, and the cultare and ) ym ration of all kinds of tropical fruits. large Proportion are the professed followers of Christ, prompted by the love of souls, as well as the desire to improve their temporal condition. One bundred and seventy-two emigrants, ‘who were sent out by the fall expedition from Baltimore, and who were ofthe class known reedmen,” and who were from or near Lynchburg, Virginia, arrived safely in Li- beria. The prospects for the future are that the so- ciety will soon have more than ever to do, as intelligent «freedmen” are continually asking uestions relative to their transter to Liberia. ‘om panies of these people have been formed at Lynchburg and Abingdon, Va., who expect to erobark next May, each 150 strong. (ne of the ‘Vice presidents, residing in the same State, who, several years since, had all his slaves transferred to Alabama, and in course of train- ing for Atrica, they all being now free, wishes the society to send some fifty whom he hopes will go. Numerous disbanded colored soldiers bave been heard trom who have expressed a wieh to emigrate, and in different portions of the South the minds of the «freedmen” are tending in the same direction, drawn there by motives of self-interest. After speaking of thead vantages of the coun- try the report concludes :—“ The work of this society has but just begun. Its fields of labor is vastly widened. Instead of half a million of free people of color there are now found mil. lions, who are the objects of its benevolent re- gards. We are, therefore, to address ourselves afresh to the work of their provement and education, and Africa's civ ation and evan- gelization—under obligations more sacred than ever, and with the noblest and most inspiring motives ever brought to bear upon patriots and Christians. And no small share of this increased responsibility will devolve upon the patrons and conductors of this institution.” Hon. Abraham Hanson was introduced, and made a very interesting address, giving the re- suits of his personal observation in Liberia, which was growing rapidly. Rev. Dr. Keeling followed, and moved a yote ofthanks to Mr. lianson, which was adopted: after which he proceeded to give a history of the rise and progress of the Society, arguing that the best interests of the colored race would be conserved by emigration to Liberia. After benediction the meeting adjourned.
