>" ANG STAR. | financial and Commercial. | « the New York Stock Market yesterday, ‘Bews by the Herrman, reporting a general in- ‘@ease of confidence in the United States secu- jg OT &e. wale py Fities abroad, and an advance of 1 ¥al x on 5-208 | 0) o on MONDAY the 15th day of snoaey at London, had a very decided effect upon Government securities and gold. Large orders X, and 5 10-40's Tose x; 9-30's were dull and Xay lower. Gold @ontinues to tend strongly downward. The lumited demard from im and the dis- Dersements of interest by the sub-treasur: Bave a tendency to depress the premium: whic! morning acquired increased force ym the tenor of the foreign news and the foreign orders for 5-20’s. The Evening Commercial says :—The opinion is gaining forve that the surplus of cotton for exportation will prove much Jarger than was generally anticipated; and, at the same time, the improved credit of this country in Europe, roduees an expectation ef a steady flow of ital to this side for investment. These tendencies are all against the exporta- tion of gold, and appear to favor an nitimate decline in the premium. This morning, the ofgeld teuched 142; there is, however, @ large “short” interest being formed, upon which an advance will probably beengineered withrn the week. It is reasonable, however, to-expect that the Sa confidence in the pational credit, both abroad and at home, wiil evidence itself in a general appreciation of na- tional evidences of debt, or in other words. in @ decline of the premium on gold. The rail- road speculation is dull and becomes gradual- ly more bearish. The mil- itary remforcements are arriving from other Gistricts. and, with the troops already in gar- Tison, will include the following =a Demgon Guards, 600 men; 12h Lancers, 200 men: Ist Royals. (infamtry,) 150; 2d 13th regiment, 450; 14th regiment, 150. This is irrespective of two batteries of the royal artil- jery, apd a small force of infantry and cavalry stationed at Ballincolig. There are 90 men, principally English, belonging to the channel *quadrens, now &t Queenstown, detailed for imetant duty in the event of any emergenc: arising. The men have been practising with emall arms during the past two days, and itis expected that they will ascend the river in fif- teen barges, which are in readiness, each car- rying &@ gun; six field pieces will also form a part of the armament. Four gunboats, armed with Armstrong’s, are to come up from Queenstown, and be stationed im the North and South Channels during the sitting of the Commission. The city constab- ulary numbers nearly one hundred men, and these have been supplemented by nearly an ¢qual number (including a small troop of cay- alry police from the depot, Phenix Park), which arrived last evening from Louth, Gai- way, King’s, Queen’s, and other counties, and have taken up their quarters in Unt Fork Bar- Tacks. Several large yards and vacant prem- jee t different points of the city have been engaged by the authorities tor the accommoda- tion of troops, as it is intended to distribute the forces. The constabulary force of this county will not be called from the outlying stations.— Cork Herald. Gary Srecutators.—The Chicago journals report the losses of some of the graia specula- tors there within the past few days as very beavy. The decline in prices, which has pro- du these sufferings has been goirg on for weeks—thus No.1 spring wheatsold on ’Change there on the 15th of November, at $1.45a$1.4¢3. On the Ist of December it sold at $1.31, and since at $1.16. This endden fall in the price bad a disastrous effect upon all who were car- rying wheat by the thonsands of bushels on a small margin. As each of these tumbled he knocked over his nearest dependent neighbor, and in this way the calamity was carried to the doors of some houses of considerable means and responsibility. During all this fluctua- = gold has remained at nearly the same ures. A Man tw Search oF wis Famity.—John Jobnson, a citizen ot Washingten city, reached this citya day or two since in search of his nate Johnson, alias Ann Wheeler. She it home in company with her son-in-law, William Lord, and his two daughters, Del- ra Lord, aged seventeen years, wife of Wm. rd, and Emma Johnson, aged fourteen years. They left on the 14th of November last. They took with them $1,400 in United States cur- reney, a feather bed, and a large dry goods box filled with clothing and table farniture. Mr. Jobnson has invoked the assistance of the po- lice in his search for them, and has left a de- scription of Mrs. Johnson and of Wim. Lord, who is & United States soldier, at the police station —Richmond Republic ft on core A Mean Trick oF 4 Wire.—The Chattanoo- ca (Tenn ) Gazette tells rather a tough story On Christmas morning one of our citizens paid & visit to a family who were his “renters.” He found the husband sitting before the fire, with a email sized “responsibility,” on either side. “A metry Christmas, . Howare you!” saysG@. “Well, Mr.G., I'm ont of sorts. A scamp came here on Saturday night, and my wife sloped with him: tast night he returned and stole my cow, here I am witn these two brats to care for.” «| *uppose you regard the lors of sour cow a8 of more consequence, under the ‘circumstances, than that of vane wife,” remarkedG. «Yes, for thin ig the third tme she bas played me this trick.» BTA vote was being taken on an j measure in the indiana Senate the anne Mr + & grave and reverend Senator, had not been attending to his “biz.” and didn’t know what the question was. His name was called by the Secretary. He looked pazzled a mcment, and then rapping the desk with his knuckles, after the manner of card-playing, said, “I pass!" An audible titter ran throngh the hall, and the President of the Senate “took it vp.” S7 In the report of a down east Agricultural Fair occurs the following: «Best bed comtorter—Miss Mary Hal).” S7 Four bundred and six deaths oceurred in New York last week.
