Sted EVENING STAR 5 ———" et How to Avert Caudle Lectures. {Columbia Correrpond’ce Charleston Courier.) I bave a great weakness for a good joke, and I thiek you will indulge me in telling the fol- low!vg which occurred in the House lastnight, ‘Thre Appropriation B.l! being under considera Won, a ceriain Kepresentative from Newberry, who is “a chronic case” in the Legislature, and ‘whom every one who was connected with that boily for any ten years before the war will re- ember as ihe incarnation of good humor, and vecognized under the familiar name of “Chris,” moyed thatan “appropriation of three silver doliars be made tor the wife of the doorkeeper, to herown exclusive use and benefit.” The ‘Piteh of the fun lies in an anecdote, which the ‘old gentieman referred to, who, by the way, is | & ga}lant old soldier, and hasa kindly heart | nder a pretty rough exterior, tells on him- self. It seems that some years since, being a little given to cock-fighting, (which he can’t help, | as be bails from Edgefield,) he went to Ham- burg. very much against the wishes of his bet- ter half. to indulge in his favorite amusement, i] and indulging a little too freely, he lost all his Money and borrowed from a friend to enable him to return home. On arriving at his house late at might, he went immediately to bis chamber, sroused his good lady, and was re- eeived pretty coolly, as she suspected, and jos'ly, that be had gambled away his sub- stance. In fact, she refused to speak to him, and quietly rolling over in bed, turned her back on her liege lord. Not at all discomposed, friena G— walked to his bureau, opened Ris private drawer, and taking out of his pocket three silver dollars, the last he had lett, commences dropping them in and stealing them out, meanwhile counting one, two, three, four, five, and so on. Mrs. G — contained herself under the operation, ignorant of the deception. until he had reached one hundred and fifty in bis count. when utterly unable to conceal her gratification at his supposed gains, and anxious to conciliate him, she rolled | over with the exclamation, “Old | man, that bine hen of your's turned out to-day a dozen as pretty chickens as you have ever seen.” nl i | | j DteTURBANCES AT Norrotk.—On New Year's day there were several disturbances in Norfolk, Va., between whites and blacks. The freedmen had a large procession, with music, speeches, &c., which passed off quietiy, but subsequently scenes of disorder occurred. In one case five negroes entered the house of a gentleman named Stephens, alleging that he was harboring a white man who had attacked ove of their comrades. A soldier of the 20th New York (says the Virginian) arrived, and passing at the time was attacted by the uproar. He entered the house, and the inmates re- quested his protection from the brutality of negro invaders. His musket was not loaded, buthe drew a single-barreled pistol and or- dered the five negroes out of the house, threat- ening to shoot the first who refused to obey his orders. The negroes went out and procured a large reinforcement, ejected the soldier, and disarmed him and placed him in charge of a Portion of the party. The soldier escaped and ran down the street, but he was headed off by two negroes on horseback, who came up with the seldier and compelled him to surrender his pistol. He ran from them, and one of the Begroes discharged his five-barreled revolver at him, neither of which shots, howeyer, took effect. The soldier came near his camp, when four or five of his comrades held the negroes at bay until the arrival ofa larger party of soldiers under an officer, whereupon the negroes eecaped. Tren “© ocirants.”—A London. paper has got together some curious details of a new Ger- man society, called “The Cogitants,” which some think to have been organized by religious fanatics, others by politieal revolutionists. The founder, whose name is given, asserts the elaim of the Cogitants to perfect knowledge, dignity, morality, a life of practical worship and @ secret which the profane may not pene- trate. There are certain principles which the clase of the community chiefly residing at prisons and reformatories would readily adopt. No one is to be punished with im prisonment for theft or fraud, or those other exhibitions of energy in the wrong direction, which are vulgarly regarded as misdemeanors or felonies. The Cogitants forbid a coffin to be buried more than half way in theearth. All thorough Cogitants are to have a free and sumptuous dinner on Christmas day, Easter Sunday, and Whit Sunday, paid for by the Wealthier members. Strong minded ladies are to have a share in the government of the church, which, representing “aretigion with- out a confession,” is likely to be a peculiar institution indeed. Next, the insignia of the | orderis specified. The head is to weara black camlet cloak. with an upright collar, bearing the blazonry of three silver stars. The inferior associates are to be known at their banquets by bumbier badges. THE PATRONAGE OF PowER.—It has long deen acustom of high officials to distribute the gitts of their positions among their relatives. In the kingdom of Great Britain it is weil known that a premier frequently fills all the offices in his gift with his kinsmen. Lord Bute did £0 centuries ago. Lord Brougham did soa few years back. The custom has grown to be autborized by time, and consequently we are neither indignant nor surprised that some Sena- tors should have secured comfortable berths for their relatives. The Congressional direc- | tory discloses the fact thata son of Senator Clark, of New Hampshire, is doorkeeper of the Yeporter’s gallery: that a son of Senator Cow- an is clerk of Senator Cowan's committee; that 2 son of Senator Doolittle is similarly favored; | likewise a son of Senator Howard: ditto a son ot Senator Dixon; ditto a nephew of Senator Foot; while a nephew of Senator Wade stands guard at one of the entrance doors to the cham- ber for $1,200 a year —Philadetphia Telegraph. Bs T wo thousand men of the Irish police force have lately resigned. English papers are ‘quite sure if 1s short pay, and not Fenianism that has caused the movement. Se D CLOTHING, &c.
