The entertainment promises to be & very pleasant one. i Fire at G Street WHarr—Burning of the Steamer Foirfaz.—Last night, the fine steamship Fairfax, of the Atlantic Line, between the District cities and New York, which arrived yesterday at the G street wharf, was discoy- ered to be on fire. From some cause no alarm was sounded from the nearest box, and it was not until a horseman, dispatched to the central office arrived, that a general alarm was rung. As coon as the fire was discovered, the ship was run up aboye the wharf, that the flames Might not spread to the warehouses. The Union and United States steamers prevented a very rapid spread of the flames until the arri- yal of the othersteamers, with theaid of which the flames were eventually extinguished, but not until about two o'clock this morning. The Fairfax broughtaround a full cargo of merchandise for the merchants of the District, which fortunately had all beendischarged. A portion of the furniture and some of the per- sonal effects of the captain and crew were de- stroyed “ Itis yet uncertain as to how the fire origi- nated. Captain Winters states that it was first discovered in the engine-room, and that at the time afull watch was on duty. The watch- man states that three men went on board the vessel about nine o’clock, and that he took them to belong to the crew, but the crew stat» that none of them were off the vessel last night, and itis thoughtby some that these men set fire to the ship. The inner works of the vessel were almost entirely burnt out, but the hull was not dam- aged. The loss is estimated at about $25.00). The Fairfax was one of the best steamers of the line, and was elegantly fitted up and fur- nished for the passenger business. She was valued at $75.0 Mr. Rhinehart, of the firm of Morgan & Rhinehart, agents for the line, with 8 number of clerks and employees, were promptly on the spot. Mr. Morgan, the senior partner, is now on a trip South. One of the men of the Hibernia Company f- ll through an open hatch, and was severely in- jured, and was sent to bis home in the light ‘wagon of Chief Engineer Sessford. Mr. Bow- ers, of the ¥ranklin, going into the hold, missed his footing, and was plunged into about ten feet depth of water. r. Reynolds, of the Co- lumbia, also was accidentally plunged into the river While the firemen were at work on the ship thieves were operating upon their property The bridle and blanket were stolen from the horse of Chief Engineer Dixon, of the United States department, at the wharf. and the Hi- bernia engine-bouse was entered and robbed of the firemen’s clothing and a gold waich and ehain. Subsequently, the police found three pairs of pants, five vests, two coats and a watch chain on the reservation corner of 19*h street and the avenue. The watch and two coats are missing —_——¢———» CHARGE OF AssacLt, &c.—Yesterday, Mr. Wm. Mr. J. J. Johnson ap- eared for the prosecution, and Mr. W. Y. Fenda for the defense. Mrs. Sarah Fink was sworn, and testified that she bas known Rease since she was a child, and that recently she and her husband have been boarding at his house. He took liberties With her, but does not know on what date— four or five days ago. He tried to make a dis- turbance between herself and husband. He wanted her to run away with him, and she refused, telling him that she could not part man and wife. He said that he had $3,000, with which he would set her up in business. She suggested her situation, being then in deli- cate health, when he said that that could be made right. She could take some staff, and he would make his servants wait on her. Her Susband was drunk, and they had her con- cealed in Rease’s room, where she slept with his wife, he (Rease) sleeping on the mattress. Om the morning of the eccurrence, Rease’s wife got up and went down stairs, and Rease came up to her and threw her down on the mattress. At first she thought she could defend herself, #nd did not make an outery, but when it was too late she couldn’t call out. She supposed he accomplished his purpose. She and her husband left the bouse the next day. It bappened about nine o’clock—half an hour after his wife left. When she got up Rease ‘was lying there, and he commenced to talk, running down her husband, and persnading ber torun away with him. He said he and bis wife had had a difficulty, and he was goimmg to leave her, for she had been writing and corres- ponding with someone. He had got up and dressed, and he threw her down on the mat- tress quick. After it was over she lett the Toom, and didn’t speak tohim again. When bis wife left the room she told witness to lock the door, and thinks she did. Witness told her busband when she made up with him. She bad been married about six months. R. T. Fink sworn.— Witness is the husband of the complainant, and was married on the 4th of July last. Marj McLaughitn, Mary Braybel. Jenny Johnson and Anna Johnson testified that the prosecuting Witness was concealed in the room of Mr. and Mrs. Rease, which is over the kitchen, and that any noise made in it can be easily heard down stairs, the kitchen not being plastered; that Rease refused togo in the room where she ‘Was, except when some one else was present. Mr. Fink recalled. —Rease has taken his wife's things for board, but he did not owe anything, having paid in advance.
