At — the close we quote the range at 16821 cents, m | jour. —‘Traneactions during the five business days which have elapsed since our last weekly review have been smaJl, and confined almost entirely te retailing descriptions, but the gen- eral tone of the market shows a decided im- provement, in view ot the falling off in the re- ceipte of Western and Howard Street Flour, and the usually spare supply of good wheat at the Corn and Flour Exchange. Rye Flour.—Sales reported at @5.75a $6 per bbl. Demand very moderate. Buckwheat Meal.-Keceipts meet the demand. Sales at $4.508$4.75 per 100 Ibs. bulk, as to quality | Corn Meal.—No sales reported. City Mills nominal at $ia$4.25 per bbl. . Provisions—The week opened with a very dull market, but towsrds the close all descrip- tions of hog prodvet were held with a good dea) of firmness and small sales were effected at advanced prices. Grain—The offerings of Wheat at the Corn Exchange continue extremely small, and prices are unsettied except for the higher grades. which are wanted for home milling. Corn has been coming forward more sparingiv, and has ruled firm with quite an active exper demand, Oats and Rye haye moved slowly, but closed witbout change. Cotton—W ith a less active inquiry the mar- ket for thie staple has ruled easier. Molasses—Sales have been unworthy of no- tice, but we have nochange to notice in prices, viz: Cuba Clayed 45250 cents, Cuba Muscova- to 59a70 cents, English island $5a90 cents, and Tto Rico 65290 cents. ‘obacco—There has been & very moderate in. quiry for Maryland crop Tobacco, as usual at the close of the year, but prices are maintained. Ground leaves coutinue in fair request, but are bardly as firm as they have been for the past two or three weeks. No sales of Ohio or Kentucky reported. Manufacturea Tobacco—Demand fair and stock moderate. Segars— Nothing of importance has been done during the past week im grocery descriptions, and refining grades are quite neglected. : Refined Sugars—Prices are % ak a cent jo wer. Whiskey—Small sales of new Western were made after the close of our last weekly sum- mary at $230a$231, but the market opened heavy after Christmas day, and sales were re- Ported at $2 vase 30. To-day the market was quite heavy, new Western being treeiy offered at $225. Catszs OF SuppeN Dreats.—Very few of the sudden deaths which are said to arise from diseases of the heart do really arise from that eause. To ascertain the real origin of sudden deaths, an experiment has been triedin Europe and reported to a scientific congress held at Stransbourg. Sixty-five cases of sudden death were made the subject of a most thorough po:t moriem examination; in these cases only two were found who died from disease of the heart. Nine out of sixty-six had died from apoplexy, while there were forty-six cases of congestion of the lunge—tbat s, the lungs were so {nll of blood that they could not work, there not being room enough for a sufficient quantity of air to enter or support life. The causes that produce congestion of the lungs are: cold feet, ught clothing, costive bowels, sitting still until led after being warmed with labor or a id walk. going too suddenly from a close led room into the cold air, especially afer king. and sudden depressing news ope- rating on the blood. These causes of sudden death being known. an avoidance of them ma serve to lengther, many valuable lives, which would otherwise be lost under the verdict of heartcompisint. That disease is supposed to be inevitable and incurable; hence many may not take the pains they would to avoid sudden death if they knew it lay in their power. &7-General Scott and Longstreet met last Week at New Orleans.
