Hkavy Rorrery oF MeRcHaNt TAiwors® Stock—1 Dishonest Clerk.—On the fourth of this month. ‘T. P. Russell was arres‘ed in the ane of S. W. Owen, where he was employed as & clerk and salesman, Ly Honest Officers Wise and Allen, acting as independent detec. tives, on a warrant issued on the oath of Mr. Owen, charging him wih baving “ feloniously stolen and taken away at divers times goods, wares and merchandize during the last five months; and he was taken before Justice Bar- naclo, who committed him to jail for a further hearing. Russell hailed from Philadelphia, and was for a time in the 3d Pennsylvania cavalry as a captain, Mr. Owen at the time being heutenant colonel of the came. On the Tegiment being mustered out, Mr. Owen em- ployed Russell asa clerk, he having been a rst-rate officer. Possessing the confidence of Mr.O.,he bad fuil control of the establish- ment: and it seems that while in the store he hel himself, not only to the goods, but to money. Mr. Owen first became aware that goods were being spirited off on an examination of his books abott the 4th of De- ecember and discovered that his loss amounted to over $2.0 in goods and money. The officers @t once set about recovering the stock, and succeeded in getting a small lot from his reom and quite a jot in Philadelphia. a quantity of which bad been cut and made up into mantles at bis residence in that city. Yesterday Jus- tice Barnaclo proceeded to the jail and the prisoner, on being called down, waived an ex- amination, and was fully committed for court. He acknowledges that he was the thief. and had taken about $1,500 in goods and money, and further, that he will plead guilty and take the consequences. MARK BaiLey’s Reavines at Wesley Chapel last Friday night, delighted a large and appreciative company. The perfect stillness And attention of all present evinced the power of Mr. Bailey in arrestingand keeping the at- tention of his hearers. Some of our best judges of reading expressed gratifying encomiums at the close, and expressed regret that we shall not again soon bave another opportunity to bear Mr. Bailey. Didspace permit, we should like to mention some of the fine points in Mr. Bailey's acts. His great power lies in the ‘¥ to render what is commonplace and stale from frequent repetition from our school gays to the present, interesting and attractive ‘There is no bevier mark of an intellectual and artistic reader. The reading of Seott’s “Loch- invar” wasa case in point. Mr. Bailey also highly excels where =weet and tender pathos is required. On the stage orm the pulpit we bave not met with renditions so beautiful, ex- pressive as he gave usin “Charlie Machree,”* and kimdred emotional poetry. Our schools and teachers are much indebted to Mr. Bailey and the Board of Trustees tor his lectures on Teading and elecution just closed. and hey cannot be without excellent effect on our teachers and pupils, by not only sowing what @ Drilliant accomplishment may be produced by fine culture of reading as an art, bat also by illustrating asystem fer 1 tainment, emi- nent for its simplicity, naturalnes: da broad foundation upon the great «common of the human heagt, and the best metaphysical logic. > xan ALEXANDRIA RiotTs.—Condition of the The Alexandria Journal of yester- Joun Anderson, colored, who was ‘woanded on Monday last in the riots which Must disgrace our city for years to come, was still alive at 12 o'clock to-day. Robert Alexandria, another colored man, bad bis skull badly fractured, and but little hopes are entertained for his recovery. As he is a robust man, however, and there is but little depression of the brain, we think the odds are greatly !n his favor.
