It is rumored that the subject of discontinu- ing the various military departments and di- visions scattered throughont the Nerthen and Southern States is held under consideration by the proper authorities. 1t is s.ated, since Lieutenant General Grant's tour through a portion of the South, that he fayors a reduction of the respective departments, and instead of baving a military commander of each South. ern State, that three departments be ree into one. General Sherman is underst te be an advocate for the consolidation alluded to. The remains of President Lincoln were re- moved on Thursday from the receptacle yault at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, to the new vault erected near the site of the p monument. The remains of Mrs. Lincoln's children were placed in the same vault. Robt. Lincoln and the directors of the National Monument Association were present at the remoyal. Some uneasiness is felt in North Carolina concerning the reported uprising of the negroes on Christmas, The organization of home guards is proceeding rapidly; fitteen or eight. eeu full companies are organized and the of. cers appointed in this county. No arms have yet been given them. In Boston yesterday the formal presentation of the battle-flage of the Massachusetts regi- ments took place. The entire military display consisted of about 3,000 veteran officers and men in marching column, representing sixty- eight regiments and displaying 250 battle-flags. The steamer Carroll, from New York for Baltimore. on Thursday night collided, in the Chesapeake Bay, with the schooners Elijah Sheddon, and Leon, the former of which was sunk and the Jatter capsized. No lives were lost and the crews of both vessels were taken to Baltimore city. The steamer Indian River, belonging toa New York fishing company, went ashore at tbe mouth of Indian river, Florida, on the 3d inst. The veesel and cargo were lost, but all hands were saved. The New York stock market yesterday was rather more active at the morning board, but prices were depressed, the tone of the market being decidedly bearish. Governments were dull, but generally firm. There is a steady in- tment demami for Seven-thirties; do. “first jue, rose \, and the second x. Five-twen- ties of 62 rose y; third issue declined ¥. Gold was dull. There was, however, an active bor- rowing demand, on “fiat” terms. A “bear” in- terest is being developed in anticipation of the payment of the January interest. Sellers op- tions of thirty to sixty days are taken at a dif- ference of one per cent. The price ranged at 146a146 & during the morning. The Commercial says:—*The appearance of Seeretary McCulloch im the city has started a good deal of discussion respecting Treasury affairs. The chief question of interest is whether the Secretary interds in vitingan early loan. We are not aware that he has given any indica‘ion of & settled purpose npon the mat- ter: but it would appear that he is not indis- Pp i to borrow, provided the prospect ap- pears favorable. he view on the street is that as the Secretary will have sooner or later to borrow over one hundred millions, im order to make up the deficiency alluded to in his iy report, he is most likely to avail him- -elfof January, asa period of special ease in the money market, fur borrowing at least a portion of the amount. The Secretary ex- presses himself strongly in favor of a vigorous contraction, and appears to consider that pol- icy especially necessary, as a means of check- ing alarge amount of speculation, which he believes to exist in most branches of bnsiness. I: ix worthy of note, im connection with the Secre'ary’s présence here, that this morning there is an unusually active demand for com- pound interest notes. Some interpret this as indicating the prospect of another fanding loan at an early day.” ‘The following ears? h gives the average of market rates during the week ending De- cembe! ds Coffee.—Rio has been in yery brisk demand, and tbe market closes strong; ordinary to fair Rio at 19a20 cents, and good to strictly prime do. at Wya2icents, Lagusyraand Java are scarce, Cotton.—The heavy falling off in the receipts at New Orleans has brought speculators into the market, and prices close very firm.
