Prof. Bailey bas been most favorably known as a distinguished elocutionist for some time in the northern cities, and we are happy to find that the reading in our public schools is to receive Rew impetus from bis hands, as well as the fact that our citizens will bave an opporta- nity of hearing some of his masterpieces at Wesley Chapei on Friday night. SSS S GARROTING AN Orricer.—Saturday night, about mine o'clock, three discharged soldiers, somewhat drunk, were inclined to be disor- derly on 7th, near H street, when officemHig- gins, of the Third Ward, went to them, and advised them to be quiet. One of the soldiers seized the officer around the neck and tried to pull bim back ward to the ground: another tried to strike him. Higgius gave the one in front a blow with his club that ended his fighting for the time,but the other would not let go his hold, and Higgins struck over his shoulder with the club, and touched the garroter in the tace, and be let go and run. Higgins caught him, and carried him to the Central Guard- house. He guve his name as Stephen Fay, and Justice Thompson sent him to the workhouse. - ° »% Case.—Yesterday morning, a mn suffe © with small-pox. pre- sented himself in front of the police headguar- ters, and asked to be sentto the hospital. Cold &s it Was, the poor fellow did not enter the building, but walked to and fro in front of the door untila vehicle was obtained to remove him to the small-pex hospital, where he will be properly attended. Wishing to be sure of a fit he handed the reyolver and his pocket book, containing over $10, to his companion and went back to try on the suit when bis companion yamoosed, be losing his money and Mr. Jacols the pistol. ees ABRESTED.— During the past two weeks three warrants have been issued in the Second Ward agar a young man named Lewis Hammer- slaz, who is charged with three different larce- nies of clothing. Last night he was arrested by Officer Hopkins and taken to the Second Ward Station and held for hearing when the witness- ee can be obtained. nee eee Resistine Orvicers.—Friday night, Pavid fan, colored, was arrested by the police for corderly conduct, but by resisting the officers suceeeded m escaping.
