The police say the fault is witb the telegraph operators. and the opera tors charge it to the police. The officer on the beat, patrolman Rossiter, says he gave the alarm trom box 37, but received no reply, and went with his partner to box 43, where his vartner, officer Bresnahan, signalled a number of times without receiving areply. The o; + ators offer to show that the fire was first covered shortly after two o'clock, and at 3: “05 o'clock they received the signal from box 43, and it was promptly responded to. The opera- tors state that Superintendent Talcot and Chief Engineer Sessford, of the Fire Department aod Sergeant Tait made an examination cf the signal boxes 43 and 37, found them in working order, and that box 37 bad not been touched, the dust on the crank being a six- teenth of aninech thick. They further state that the magnetic clock in the central office ebows that the operatives were all at their posts at the hour named. The dial which de- tects any neglect of duty, showed that at2¥ c‘elock and 3 o'clock, five minutes before the slarm was given, the operator in charge had vested the wires, and found them in working order, showing that these boxes could not have been rung without an immediate reply from the central office. The whole matter will be investigated, it having been reported to Super- ntendent Richards.
