AN ELOPEMENT AND ARREST.—On Wednes- day last, a well-known resident of Baltimore, doing business in Washington, appeared at Mar- shal Carmichael’s office, and gave information of a rather extensive breach of trust operation, bg, marge by his own wife. He stated that e had been married some six years, and although he had, upon certain occasions, been ruffled somewhat at her conduct, yet he had never doubted her truth and honesty. On Tuesday last, however. be states that he dis- posed of a house on Exeter street for $4,000, and gave her $3,900 of the money to be de- posited in bank. He took his departure for Washington. and upon returning the same night, was somewhat taken aback at receiving a note from his truant wife, coolly informing him “that she had taken the money, and by the time the note reached him she would be thousands of miles away with one she loved dearly.” Exasperated at her con- duct, he obtained the services of detective Smith, by whose sid he was enabled to trace her, and found that she had given the money to a young man (whose name, out of respect to his family, we refrain from publishing) and had concluded arrangements for a final de- parture. The husband was fortunate enough, Dowever, on Friday last, to encounter the aforesaid young man, who, it is said, had been a former admirer of his fickle wife, and hailing @ policeman, ordered his arrest. He was taken before Marshal Carmichael, when he admitted having received the money, and offered to re- fund it, if the husband would stay further pro- ceedings. To this the husband willingly as- sented, expressing no desire to recover his wife, but stating that he only wanted the money. The case was immediately compromised by the re- turn of the money and the young man released, the husband leaving the office, apparently well pleased with the denowunement.—Balt. Gazette. Not EmMrowrxrp To Take Necro Evi- DENCE.— Yesterday morning & case came be- fore Mayor Saunders, in which a man, named Joseph Brown, was charged with assaulting a” negro woman. When the parties were called, it appeared that the only witnesses against the accused were negroes, whereupon his Honor announced that the law under which he at present acted did not empower him to take the evidence of a negro inst & white man, and he could. therefore, take no cognizance of the transaction. He stated that if proper testimony were adduced to show that any white person bad committed an assault on & negro, the charter under which he acted wonld require him to punish the offender; but until the law was altered so as to give the negroes the right to ce in court against white persons, he could not permit them that privilege. He did not consider that General Turner's order tarn- ing over certain cases for his consideration, embraced snch as the one then before him. Major Croft being present, thereupon instructed his guard to take the parties before Colonel McEntee, Provost Judge.—Richmond Times. Kent County.—On the 6th inst., Geo.
