EVENING STAR. Interludes. The editor of the Central (St. Louis) Advocate: bas bad his righteous soul vexed with some of the tasbionsule musical performances of the Un.¢s. fursher East, The interludes are not confined | toSt. Louis. But read the following from the Ce: I—Interludes—from the Latin inéer— between, and ludere—to play—we have our eupbonious word interlude. What is it? Simply to play between the actsofa drama, While the Actors take breath, change their dress OF shiit the scenes, or to play a strain between stanzas tor some purpose not known. We make no pretense to mer gr acumen, we only know when we ieel right during the singing. and when wedon't. Interludes may be ail right, we presume they are when rightly used, but we haveotten found our devotions chpped | in summary styles by the ontbreak of an in- | terlude. We would not have ventured to express our convictions if we bad mot been backed up by. one of the mosteminent musi- cians in the United States. An interlude is not a humbug, not always a bore, but its office is, if we express it honestly, “to show off.” It is a big flourish, an ornamental display, often in the worst possible taste. Our feelings may be expressed thus: A minister gives out Cowper's glorious hymna, “Phere is a fountain filled with blood.” ‘The organ s’aris, the prelude is well enough, all are ready, the congregation join with choir end the plaintive and affecting strain thrills every heart, and the first verse closes, and then we have the interlude. This is the way it | goes “Tbere is a fountain filled with blood, Drawn from immanuel’s veins; And sinners plunged beneath that flood, Lose all their guilty stains.” Dee dum, dum dee doodle doodle dee dum, | Rk T—stel—pro—roo—oo—fee, fum, ful, de ral de dum. “The dying thief rejoiced to see Trat fountiin im his day; And there may | though vile as he, Waek all my sins away.” R—r-r-r—rip, rep, b—o-0-0-n-g, Kuna —ting, tem, t-o-o-n-g, S w-e-e-p, e-e-d—a-a-h—o-h, Ro-v-e—dd-e-e dum d-o-o-m, ete. Now we do not do this to ridicule, we write just what we often feel, and what others feel, and do not know what's the matter. Th fact is, interludes are not often needed, and when Bsed at all, ought to be very brief, and in the same strain hymn, i-e.. they onghttokeep up the mournful or joytul feeling. When an organ changes the current of devotion it dest roys the effect tihe smmging. There ts passion in an or- gan. We never knew its power until recently when we saw @ large congregation sit a whole evening and listen to the marvelous perform- ancecf su organ. It can tramsport{ja congre- | gation from one wave of emotion to another. It can rnin a solemn byinn by an absurd inter- luce; and it is so with ail instruments used in churches.
