RYLAND CHAPEL, Island.—Public meeting of the Metropolitan Temperance Union. —<—— Meetrxe or THE Ligvor DEALERs.—The Liquor Dealers Associauon met last night at Temperance Hall. There were some sixty members present, and a number of visitors from New York. The meeting was presided over by the President of the Assoziatior, Mr. Wn. ht. ‘A. F Putentini, David Jones, James Wood, Patrick Murpby, Nicholas Weyant, Philip Nephut, and Debner Casher were proposed for eres ° and duly elected. Mr. J. H. Williams, Vice President of the Liquor Dealers Association of New York, who ‘was present by invitation, addressed the meet- ing at considerable length, reviewing the diffi- culties under which the liquor dealers of New York had labored for the past fifteen years, and remarked that (bey had struggled against €@n intolerant fanaticism which endeavored to crusp them. These fanatics, not satisfied with dictating what people’s politics shall pe, al- most assume to decide what they shall eat, erink, and wear. The garments of this class of people are dyed with the best blood of the country, yet they attempt to hold the liquor dealers up to the public gaze as the enemies of mankind. These people managed to get con- trot of the legislature, and a stringent anti- liquor law was passed. The liquor dealers combined, not to resist the law, but to appeal to the sense of justice of the people. The mat- ter, however, was taken before the courts, and the law declared unconstitutional. Mr. Williams thought the liqnor dealers of ‘Washington had but little to complain of in comparison with those of New York, but said if fanataciem once got sway it was unyie Ke and the liquor dealers here ought to combine to anticipate action. If there was any evil to com- plain of they could only get redress by combi- mation. If they would allow any inroads to be made upon their rights they would be sorely impressed, and he, therefore, exhorted them to combine, for if the members of the Councils = obnoxious laws this year next year the iquor dealers would tell these gentlemen that they did not want them, and others who did not hold the liquor dealers up as aiders and abettors of crimes could be elected. The speaker then advised the association to — aloof from political associations; to ask for nothing that is not right, and submit to nothing that is wrong, and assured them of the sympa- thy of the association he represented in their efforts to secure their just rights and of their Willingness to aid them in any manner in their power. Capt. Isaiah Rynders, who happened to be present, was ¢ i on for a speech. In re- sponse, Mr. Kynders said he bad not come here to make peech, but he would address ibem at another time. He was not a liquor dealer nor much ot inker, but he was op- Posed to special legislation against any branch of business. He was not interested im the Li- quor Dealers’ Association, but was in all gen- eral laws, and he bad felt the effects of that class of legislation. The Puritans, from the landing from the Mayflower, had kept it up, burnt Quakers, drove Roger Williams into Kbode Island, out of Connecticut or Massa- echusetts—he had forgotten which—if a man was caught kissing bis wife on Sunday he was expelled from church; but they caught a min- ister kiesing bis. This special legislation will prevent us from eating what we desire. Dr. Abernethy had said that more men had been killed by eating than drinking. It was a mis- take that only the bad drank. The worst men do not drink; the worst men never drink. The ‘Worst man he ever knew in Baltimore did not drink. The two worst men in Washington never drank. The fanatics had deluged our jand in blood. Look at old Virginia. Though not & Virginian he loved her. This puritan- ical set had made the South desolate. He was not opposed to the war after it commenced—it Was inevitable. and bound to result as it did— in the desolation of the fairest and best portion of our land; but this spirit of persecution was inherent in the Puritans The speaker concluded by remarking that he had spoken to several members of the Wash- ington Councils about the liquor laws now complained of, and he was informed that they were urged by the clergy. The clergy—a ter- Tible word—he had tought them for forty years, when they attempted to interfere with the tem- poral affairs of the civil or general government, and if he lived he would fight them forty more if they interfered in such matters. If your Jaw-makrrs are so afraid of your clergy that they promise to support you privately, but leave you.leave them. When ministers preach. ed the Gospel. he (the speaker) had the greatest Fespect for them, but when they stepped be- Yond and mingied in politics, he was opposed io them Mr. Rynders retired amid great applance, fnd after a vote of thanks bad been tendered the speaker, the meeting adjourned. — Tue Taries TURNED.—Several days ago, Sergeant Eckloii, of the Fourth Ward, arrested W. By the Bard of Oak Hall. The times are bard; you'd like to know How you may save your dollars; The way to doit I wiil show If you will read what follows: A man who lived not far from Who worked hard at bis trade, But had a household to support, That squandered all he made. I met him once; says he, oe I leok threadbare and rongh; I've tried to get myself a sui But can't save up enough.” Says I, “My friend, how much have you? I'll tell you where to go To get a suit that’s sound and cheap— At Suirn, Broturrs & Co.” He took what little he had saved And went to Smita & Broragns, And there he got a handsome suit For half he paid to others. Now he is home ; he looks so well, And their respect is such That when they take their daily meals They don’t eat half so much. And now he finds on Saturday night, With all their wants supplied, That he bas money left to spend And some to lay aside.
