Arrangements are perfected for one of the most successful affairs of the season. Boarp or Trapz.—The Board of Trade Di- rectors met last night at the Trade Rooms, cor- ner of 6th street and Pennsylvania avenue. Mr. S. Norment was called tothe chair in the absence of the President. The following persons were proposed for Membership and elected:—Amos Kendall, A. Orme & Son, Alexander Gardner, W. Stickney, —_ hg! . Baldwin Brothers, M. G. Emo- yi W. A. Bradley, K. F. Page, Gray & Noyes, . Coyle, David Edes, OC. Wendell, C. Edmon- ston, Thomas Lewis, Charles Bradley, S. J. Bowen, Martin Connolly, and Mayfield & Brown. A communication was received from Dr. R. Finley Hunt (formerly city surveyor), making Suggestions in relation to the improvement of the river Crag &e. Pane recommen, as the only means of preventing the permanent de- stracnon of the Washington and Georgetown channel, and also as a sanitary measure, the building of a wall or breakwater whose curve shall be a reverse of that taken by the carrent of the river in its deflection from the shore at Easby’s ship-yard, commencing from some point at or near the foot of Analostan Island, and continuing it until its tangent will be a tangent to the curve which the Washington shore makes between the Long Bridge and the Arsenal wharf. The effect of building this wall would be to throw the current of the Po- temac directly from the foot of Analostan Island tothe Washington shore at the Long Bi. ge, and thence along the shore to, and past the mouth of the Eastern Branch. All alon this line the current would wash out this so: alinvial deposit, and give us a channel about & thousand feet wide and from fifteen to twen- ty-five deep. This would meet all wants for commercial purposes, and would never re- quire dredging as long as the Potomac con- tinues to flow. The channel of the river being se much deepened at the mouth of the canal, the deposit with which the canal is filled ‘Would in the course of time, if left to itself, drift out and be carried down the river, or if once removed by dredging would not be re- placed As the interests and negotiations involved in this plan are such as to be beyond the pro- vince of any other authority than the Govern- ment of the United States, therefore it is the duty as well as the policy of the Government to take it in hand and carry it out in such manner as may seem best to them. The communication was referred to the com- Mittee on routes, &c.. with instructions to con- fer with the Mayor and Board of Aldermen on the subject. Mr. A. KR. Shepherd offered the following resolutions Whereas the business interest of the Dis- trict of Columbia and its growth and import- ance would be materially augmented by a con- solidation of the cities of Washington and Georgetown and of the county of Washington into one municipality, instead of being, as at present, under the control of five distinct au- thorities, viz: the Corporation of Washington, Corporation of Georgetown, the Levy Court, the Police Commissioners, and the Commis- sioner of Public Buildings; and Whereas it is important that measures should be taken to induce Congress to take away the present charter and regulations, and so consol- idate the District, that its government may be efficient and harmonious;and - Whereas itis eminently proper that the Board of Trade of the District of Columbia, repre- senting so large an amount of the property and trade of the District, should take the lead in this movement: Therefore be it Resoived, That a meeting of the Board of Trade be held at the City Hall on Wednesday, the 6th proximo, at 5 p. m., to consider the propriety of furthering this project, and that the secretary give pubic notice of such meeting. Mr. Shepherd said the measure proposed in these resolutions was a business necessity, and should not be mixed upinany degree with — negro suffrage or anything else. We ve nothing todo with politics inthis Dis- trict, and they never shonid be dragged into Matters of District interest. Mr. Elvans, Mr. J. F. Brown and Mr. R. M. Hall followed, taking the same view, and the Topos.tion calling the meeting to take the sub- ject into consideration was carried unani- mously. Mr. Elvans stated that W. J. Stone, Esq., had in course of preparation for the conside- ration ot the Board of Trade and presentation to Congress, if approved by the business com- munity, 4 law for the creation of limited part- nerships in tbe District of Columbia, and also a general law for the creation of corporations for manufacturing purposes, similar to the pro- Visions ot the laws of New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Mr. R. M. Hall presented a communication from B. B. French, Esq., suggesting the ad- Vantage of uniting the resources of the Masonic fraternity and the Board of Trade in the erec- tion of a building in this city for the use of both organizations: referred. Messrs. Jos. F. Brown, Geo. F. Gulick, Asbury Lloyd, and Crosby S. Noyes, of the Board of Aldermen committee, were present, apd a protracted conversational discussion upon the subject of permitting railroad connec- tions through the city by steam was held, and the unanimous opinion of the Board of Trade Was elicited, to the effect that such connection would be most disastrous to the business in- terests of Washington. ——¢——— ARREST OF A SUPPOSED PICKPOCKET AND Hore: Turer.—Tuesday night, a dispatch was received at police headquarters requesting the arrest of a printer named George Seymour, on the steamer Vanderbilt, as soon as sbe should arrive at the Washington wharf. He is charged with picking the pocket of an old gentleman at Richmond of a passage ticket andasum of money. The nember of the ticket was 499. At 7 o'clock yesterday morning the steamer ar- rived. and was boarded by Patrolman Wal- lingsford, of the Seventh Ward. As soon as Seymour was arrested he threw overboard a goid watch and chain, which was sabseguent- ly fished up by a colored man and given to the officer. The hatf of the ticket, 499. which se- cured Seymour's passage to Washington, was produced by the agent of the steamer, and the other half, which was good fora to Baltimore, was found on the prisoner. The prisoner was taken to police headquarters for safe keeping. There detectives Kelley and Bigley saw him, and suspected him of having, on the night of the i3th instant, entered three Tooms of the National Hotel, from one of which, occupied by Mr. William Price, was stolen diamond pin and a valuable silver watch. From another room, occupied by Pay- master Wm. H. Thompson, there was taken 265 and a pistol; and from another, oceupied by Mr. Beveridge, $i5 and a set of fine sleeve buttons. Last night, Mr. Nivers, clerk of the National, went to headquarters and identified the —— as aman who was registered at the hotel on the 13:b instant by the name of “G@. Seymour.” Detective Kelley recognized him as 4 man named Thomas Mason. ———§————— Circuit Court, Judge Olin—Baker and Cropley against Bogue and Donnelly; verdict for plaintiff for $05.23, with interest from May 20, 1365. Chamberlain, its leader, Prof. Schell presiding at the piano. Mr. Harry Sherman played two pieces in fine style. Miss ‘Woods’ solo was encored, and the singing of Mrs. Kate Smith and Miss Emma Fienner mo pprecisted. ‘Fhe chorus, in which the cboirs of seven different churches were repre. sented, was particularly fine.
