United States vs. Charles D. Lord. ‘This was a demurrer to an indictmant Sgainst Lord, for obtaining from Richard Busteed. jr., two certificates. each of the value of six hun. dred and eighty-five dollars, by means of falsely and fraudulently representing that he forty thousand dol ars to his credit in the Na- tional Hank of the Metropolis, out of which he could and would pay Busteed $1,370 for said certificates. The certificates. as described in the indict- ment, were from two recruits mustered into the army of the United States under the Presi- dent's call for three hundred thousand men, and to be credited to the town of Adams, Jefferson county, New York, and it was asserted on the part of the prosecution that the holder of these certificates could demand and receive from the town of Adams the tocal bounty promised by said town to recruits mus- tered into the army of the United States and credited to that town, and that they were in effect. though not in form, instruments of writing for the rayment of money to all intents and purpeses, and therefore within the mean- ing of the act of Congress of the 2d March, 1531, 12th sec., ith Stat., 448, which is in following words, to wit “Every person duly convicted of obtaining by falee preienses any goods or chattels. money, bank note, promissory note, or any other in- trument in writing for the payment or deliv- ery of money, or other valuable thing,” &c., “shall be sentenced to suffer imprisonment and aber for a period not less than one year, nor re than five years. Mr. Merrick for the Cefendant. rr oo LARCENIES IN THE SEVENTH Warp.—Yes- terday atternoon, Lena Smith was arrested by officer Barker for the larceny of a lot of infant's clothing, the property of Christiana Webber. She was held to bail for court by Justice Bos- well. George N a was arrested by officer Gib for the larceny of a gallon of shucked oysters from Jos. Freeland. a street huckster. He took the bucket into his house, emptied the Oysters into a vessel belonging to himself, threw the bucket out to the boy, and then threw a brick at him to drive him away. Nolan was sent to jail by Justice Handy. m. H. Bron- sell was arrested by officer Gibson on a charge of stealing horses. It appeared from the of- fic'al statement that officer Boyle received in- formation yesterday that two horses had bee put up in the stable of Felix Dugan, on Mary- land avenue, near 4& street. Boyle went to stable and took the horses, and brought them to the statien- house, and ascertained that the horses bad been stolen from E. P. (Quinn, Surrattsville, Prince George's county, Md. Officers le and Parker tben arrested Dugan and Patrick G. Hawkins on suspicion of the larceny. They had a hearing before Justice Handy, when a colored boy, who slept in the ble, swore that he saw Dugan and Hawkins ring two horses to the stable between 4 and 5 o'clock in the morning. They were held for further hearing. This morning, Wm. H. Bron- sell was arrested by officer Gibson, on the com- plaint of Dugan, who says he will’ prove that Hronsell stole them. Bronsell was held fr a bearing, and Dugan and Hawkins were dis. missed and held to bail as witnesses. eee paomeres Founp Deap aT BLADENSBURG.—A coron- er’s inquest was held on the 25th ult., by Jus- tice H. Wallis, acting as coroner, over the body ofan unknown white man, found at the rail- road bridge, near Bladensburg, on the Balti- more and Washington railroad. The deceased was decently dressed, having on his person a black frock coat and pants. beaver hat and Jong boots. He was supposed to be abont 65 or @0 years of age, with a bald head, and his face yery much disfigured. The leftarm and left #e were broken. There were no papers or marke on his person by which he could be identified. The jury rendered a verdict that the deceased came to his death by a fall frem the railroad bridge, or from the cars whilst passing over thesame. The tall wasabout forty feet. The body was buried near where it was found. ORPHANS’ CoURT, Judge Purcell.—Yesterday, Jobn If. Ward qualified as executor of Jane Ward, deceased, giving bond in the sum of 22,000. Letters of administration were issued to Rich- ard G. Polley, on the estate of Thos. McGuire; to Harriet Burtis, on the estate of John R. Bur- us. Richard G. Polley was appointed guardian to the orphans of Thomas Me(Guire. The seventh account of the guardian to the orphans of A. O. Dayton, deceased, was ap- proved and passed. Inventories of the estates of Harriet Wilkes, Johanna Grant, and Edward Wright, were re- turned. ——-* Guyxxixe tm Farrax.—The Alexandria provost judge has given notice that all persons, white or colored, caught hunting, fishing or fowling on any lands in the county of Fairfax, and lying within five miles of navigable waters. without a license or permit from the ewners of said lands, are liable to be arrested and forfeit their towiing pieces or fishing ap- paratus, boats, or other means of conveyance any officer making said arrest, and for the first offence a fine of three doliars, for the sec- ond six dollars, and for the third nine dollars, nnd all costs, with imprisonment until the same is paid. Fenalties double if committed in the night or on Sundays. ~ Fatat Rattroap AccipEeNnT.— About nine o'clock on Monday night last, a passenger train from Annapolis to Annapolis Junction, on the Annapolis and Elk Railroad, when within a mile from the Junction, ran over and killed aman who was lying upon the track. His body was cut and mashed in a horrible manner. He was found two be Charles P. Pea- nington, formerly of Baltimore, but for the last #)x or eight years residing with his father-in- law, Richard Owens, about two miles from Annapolis Junction, to which place his boty was conveyed. He leaves a wife and threa children. —o WEARING THE Breecues.—Last night about £50 o'clock Sergeant Tait, of the Second Ward, noticed a girl named Mary Jarboe walking the streets with a lad whose appearance was very snspicious, much like that of the “Sherman Jiats,”” Who infest the doorways of the public places of amusement; or that other order of thieves who sleep in the markets and plunder the dealers. Upon taking Mary and her com- rade to the station the comrade proved to be Mary J. Stevens, a_young girl from the fancy ranches of the 7th Ward. who bad dressed her- self in male attire to look for her lover. The two Marys were sent to the workhouse in de- fault of $5 each. ———— Frre.—This morning, about ten o'clock, fire broke out in one of the wooden tenements on *ib street, near F, occupied by J.C. Johnson, nair-dresser. The fire originated froma stove- pipe passing through the laths and plaster to the flue. The fire was extinguished by the neighbors before the firemen, who were very prompt in responding to the alarm, had reached the spot. The damage was slight, mostly to the furniture by the waterthrown. Chief En- gineer Sessford notitied the occupants to change the pipe so 7 » pass directly into the fine, otherwise they would be liable to fire. t- tie Cutckes Stratinc.—Lettie Buckley, col- ored, Was arrested last night by officer Watts, of the Third Ward, on a charge of stealing a «bicken from Albert Nichols. This morn- ing the prosecuting witness failed to appear, and the friends of the prisoner said the only grounds that Nicbols had for complaint was the statement of a fortune teller whom he con. sulted after he missed his chicken. Justice ‘Thompson released her on bail for a hearing to-morrow. eee Larceny OF A Mute —Tuesday afternoon, ‘Thomas Hinton and Rebecca Hinton, colored, ‘were arrested by officer Davis, on the charge of being concerned in the larceny of two mules from J. ©. Haviland, of Montgomery county, Md., and subsequently Ephraim Moore, col- ored, was arrested on the same charge.
